    War Diary
    Royal Winnipeg Rifles

    Wednesday 11 OCTOBER 1944

Partly cloudy and cool with fair visibility. During the night A Coy captured 28 prisoners who were taking part in a counter-attack on the Regina Rifles right flank. A Scout Patrol sent to GRAAF JAN in the morning were forced to withdraw by hy enemy SA fire from BIEZEN. At 1400 hrs a platoon from C Coy attempted to occupy GRAFF JAN but after a bitter struggle with strong enemy forces from BIEZEN the platoon was forced to withdraw owing to severe casualties and lack of ammunitions. Another C Coy Platoon assisted in the withdrawal by giving intense covering fire. Shelling and SA fire continued to make it impossible to move about in fwd areas except by crawling on the semi flooded ground or in water filled ditches, both of which were littered with German and Canadian dead.

    Thursday 12 OCTOBER 1944

Partly cloudy and cool with fair visibility. At 0530 hrs C Coy, assisted by one platoon from A Coy launched a second attack on the village GRAAF JAN and by 0620 hrs the Royal Winnipeg Rifles had succeeded in occupying the village. The enemy immediately launched a determined counter-attack which resulted in a house to house battle and in some cases room to room. Every available weapon was employed by both sides and the issue was undecided until Sgt Kelly of C Coy, with a few of his men rushed out in the open and tossed hand grenades through windows of enemy occupied houses. The exploding grenades were too much for the Germans and leaving many dead and wounded the enemy withdrew to BIEZEN. Casualties among the Royal Winnipeg Rifles were also hy and included Lt D.L. Riesberry and one sec of A Coy who were killed or captured when they were surrounded and had used up all their ammunition. The Battalion snipers were brought forward and succeeded in killing Germans who risked exposing themselves. The remainder of the day was devoted largely to reinforcing the walls of occupied houses and in bringing up food and ammunition.

    Friday 13 OCTOBER 1944

Partly cloudy and cool with fair visibility. Activities during the day consisted mainly of patrol activities which involved exchanges of fire with enemies to the North of the Battalion position. A Coy remained at 021019, B at 029023, C at 017023 and D at 030020. During the evening C Coy repelled a counter attack and inflicted severe losses on the enemy. Shelling was less intense but snipers continued to be numerous though less aggressive. Few casualties were suffered and many troops had succeeded in improving water proof shelters.

No Retreating Footsteps by Will Bird: Major Wright went out in his jeep and as he drove to B.H.Q. the carrier ahead of him passed a horse that was staying along side of the road. Suddenly there was a loud explosion and when Wright stopped his jeep and looked back the horse had vanished. It had been blown to bits of hair and flesh. A Bren Carrier had been blown into the ditch. Privates A. McDougall and --> C.H. Miller <-- were killed. Sgt. T.W. MacKay and Pte. H.T. Myra were badly wounded. Major Wright managed to get the wounded men into his jeep and drove them to the R.A.P.

    The Ijzendijke Explosion

On the night of 19 October 1944, Churchill AVREs from 284 Armoured Assault Squadron, Royal Engineers, part of 79th Armoured Division made camp at a farm near Ijzendijke, Holland. The next morning the tank crews engaged in regular maintenance tasks as well as the storage of equipment and supplies in preparation for an assault that would take place the next day. Late in the morning a convoy of Canadian trucks arrived from the 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade Company, Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, with supplies for the tank unit. In addition to regular rations, supplies, petrol and ammunition carried by the convoy, one lorry carried a cargo of some three tons of liquid nitroglycerine. This highly unstable explosive was for the 'Conger', a Bren carrier adapted to launch a flexible hose across a minefield. The nitroglycerine was then pumped into the hose and was detonated to create a path through the minefield.

Early in the afternoon, at approximately 1300 hours, a huge explosion rocked the field where the Chruchill AVREs were being attended to. The cause of the explosion is unknown, but the result was devastating. A total of 41 men, British and Canadian, were killed and over 50 others wounded, many seriously. Ten armoured vehicles were destroyed and it would be over a month before the squadron was again committed to operations.

Fifty years after the tragedy, Martin Reagan, a Churchill AVRE tank commander who survived the explosion, returned to the site for the first time. His visit set in motion a series of events which saw a monument dedicated at the site on 20 October 1997.

On 21 Oct 44 Tpr. Findlay J. was a member of a patrol which crossed the canal to recce (reconnaissance) the town of Zeebrugge, Belgium.

At map reference 84501327 (Kustlaan) sheet 21 and 31 Zeebrugge and Brugge we were pinned down by enemy fire and I ordered a withdrawal and Tpr. Findlay was shot while crossing an open field. He fell approx. 100 yard to my front and groaned for a few seconds and then remained still.

I myself was pinned down for approximately four hours after this occurrence and was unable to approach Tpr. Findlay. During all this time Tpr. Findlay did not move and I presumed that he had been killed.

Owing to the nature of the ground and position of the enemy I did not think it warranted the risk of other men's lives to attempt to extricate Tpr. Findaly. L.A. Hughes, Lieutenant.

    Boekhoute, Belgium (Noordstraat/ Ooststraat)
    Weather - fair

1 Platoon spent the day salvaging chespaling from the landing ramps built some time ago. Apparently chespaling is in very short supply and every scrap must be salvaged. 2 Platoon cleared the roads in Breskens, Netherlands and also cleared the main road South as far as 088182 (Oude Rijksweg, Breskens). 3 Platoon attempted to clear the roads in Schoondijke, Netherlands but little was accomplished due to by shelling. About 1100 hrs they suffered 3 men killed and 9 men wounded. They were in a shelter but the shell came in the door-way. It was a most unfortunate accident.

The battle for Oostburg, Netherlands is about to take place.

This day I would like to honour 19 year old Paul Forrest Steeves from the Queen Own Rifles of Canada.
Killed in action just outside Oostburg, Netherlands. German rifle bullet. Died (almost) instantly after impact. His friend Beardshaw, George Herbert (B/158986) Q.O.R. saw it happen, but had no change to help. George survived the war, but was taken P.O.W. for 28 days in the town of Aalsmeer, Netherlands. A few years after the war he visited Paul's parents until they passed away.
George is still alive and one of the very last living Q.O.R. vets from WW2.

Photo: Temporary burial Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. Dunnepolder, Netherlands (Area Philippine, Biervliet, IJzendijke) All are now buried in this cemetery.
