Just found on Canadian Army Newsreel No. 103

At 3.04 LVT 2 SABOTEUR AoS looks like P5822029 but not sure. No other markings shown that I could see.

Anyone any thoughts as to which unit she belongs to?

    Cheers

  2. Excellent Kevin!

This must be B Sqn 11 R Tks, which had similar names such as SWASHBUCKLER, SHARPSHOOTER & SAILOR, whereas A Sqn used animal names (and famous historical figures when a 5th troop was added), and C Sqn used town names. The squarish shape above the Reg No might be the B Sqn tac sign, and the square on the left the AoS flash, although no Serial is visible.

AoS 54 on the front of the LVT(2) sailing starting at 3:10 tends to confirm this.

The LVT's dip in the water opposite Persingen, to the east of Nijmegen. You can see the church of this tiny village in the background.

Interesting are the images at 03:14 which show the demolition of the Waal river dike near Nijmegen by Canadian Engineers. A measure that was taken to drain the water, that pushed in through the enemy made hole in the dike at Erlecom, from the flooded Ooijpolder. Unfortunately the enemy got wind of this and they responded by blowing up the dyke east of Cleves, which neutralized the effect of the dike hole at Nijmegen.

    Hi Michel,

Thanks for that. What do you make of the census number?

Also at 1.22 on British Movietone film - Boulogne Is Freed I found Churchill Crocodile SHRAPNEL which I think is from 141 RAC.
    I would appreciate your thoughts.

  5. Kevin,

I read SABOTEUR's WD No. as 5822059. As often, only one digit is a problem, here the penultimate one. I hesitate between a 5 and a 6, but I think it's a 5 because of the apparent flat top:

    CANR 103 - 03.03 - LVT2 SABOTEUR - 020_cr.jpg
    CANR 103 - 03.03 - LVT2 SABOTEUR - 026_cr.jpg
    CANR 103 - 03.03 - LVT2 SABOTEUR - 031_cr.jpg

As for SHRAPNEL yes, it must be 141 RAC because it was the only Crocodile unit present at Boulogne, plus the name starts with an S. The name itself makes me think SHRAPNEL was in the same troop as SPLINTER, thus 4 Tp A Sqn.

    Hi Michel,

For SABOTEUR going by your images I will go with P5822059.
As for SHRAPNEL that makes sense too.

    Cheers
