    Hello,

Just joined the forum. I am starting to look into my Grandfather’s military service during WW2. I believe he served with detachment 395 Royal Marine Engineers. I have found very little info on RME so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

HI Grant and welcome. You didn’t mention your grandfathers name or rank or when he served, so those details may help find more information specifically on him (if available).

One of the great sources of information on units and their Officers (Commanding Officer etc) is the NAVY LISTS....the one in this link is Jan 1945, and shows the Officers of 394 Det, RME in the bottom left corner. You can also find more lists for each year, quarter etc if you like get more information on the Officers

    (281) - Navy lists > Quarterly > 1945 > January > Volume 2 - British Military lists - National Library of Scotland

Another source of “General Information” is a site called Fold3.com (owned by Ancestry.com). It’s a dedicated “military resource” site and has 1000 of documents from US, Canadian, British etc sources.

The “issue” is that it is a “pay for use” site. So you have to buy a membership.

For example, below are from the Report on Operation Neptune (D-Day landings) that detail a bit about the Royal Marine Engineer in this operation.

Fold3 also has Admiralty reports that may give you specific information on actual operations undertaken by the RME. I have looked at a few on this site. Usually specific names aren’t given (except for Officers involved) but it can give you detail if you know your relative took part in a specific operation or was located at a specific location

Thanks for the info! His name was Alexander McGregor Graham and I believe held the rank of Marine. He severed with SEAC and may have been in India and Burma. I remember seeing photos of him with captured Japanese guns and and a Japanese flag.

I believe he may have been injured during his service. I unfortunately never met him as he died in 1960.

    Appreciate your help.
