Good morning, I'm trying to find a bit more detail about my late father in law's service. He was in B Independent L of C Sig Sqn, Royal Signals in North Africa and Italy from 1943 to 1947, apparently. Like many, he never spoke about it, and my wife would like to know more about her dad. Any assistance would be gratefully received.
Hi Rob and welcome Best thing to do first is to apply for his service records, see here how to - Get a copy of military service records Once you have them then you can get copies of the appropriate War Diary. regards Robert
Thanks for the reply. They are not taking any requests at the moment, due Covid. I was hoping someone may have knowledge of the unit, at least.
Nothing on their website about that. Last week I sent a request for a service record. It takes months in normal times so obviously the virus situation will delay things even more. If you send off for the records now at least you will have joined the queue.
We are going to do that, but postage delays as well means it will be next year before we hear anything. For example, it just took 1 month for a letter to get here from Singapore. We were just hoping someone may have knowledge of the unit, for example.
Again, doesn't help in the short term, but there is a file at The National Archives which could be your father in law's unit. There are members on this forum who provide a copying service if you are unable to go yourself. It is not yet known when they will re-open. WO 170/8292, Lines of Communication Signals: `B' L.of C. Sigs. 1946 Feb - Apr.
Thank you Richard, that does appear to be the unit. The chances of us getting to Kew are remote, and any offers of assistance would be greatfully accepted. Weve been searching for some time now, and this is the first sign of anything that matches.
