I found some Admiralty War Diaries which are very informative.

But they are 800 odd pages for just over a month and are going to take an age to read, and I only have until tomorrow.

But it won't let me download them. Any ideas?

    Hi Gus,

Yes unfortunately the buggers won't allow you to download the pages :banghead:

So what I am doing and unfortunately this is a long way around it but the only way I have been able to do the pension cards that I want for over 200 chaps is to -

Open the page with the card on then PRINT SCREEN the page then paste onto a WORD DOCUMENT and then later when I have more time I will crop the page so I just have the card visible. I hope this is helpful sorry it may seem long winded but it is the only way I have been able for this to work for me, if any body as any better ideas please fire away.

    Hi

Yes I am doing pretty much the same.

If you have Windows 10 you might want to have a look at the snipping tool as it's far quicker than using print screen.

If you use the clipping tool you can crop before pasting, then save it as a PDF. This has the advantage that you can use the free to down load icecream split and merge PDF tool to link pdfs so you can scroll up and down them which is more convenient if you are saving a number of related documents.

    Fold 3 Website says:
"Access to the records in the featured collections will be free until 25 May 2020 at 11:59 p.m. ET". I make this sometime early Tuesday morning. Info in #1 is a day out.

    Tim
Edit: Fold 3 is actually quite cheap if you get organised. You can get one month's access for under £7.00.

Yes Robert, Gus had already mentioned the snipping tool. Personally, I wouldn’t bother with it where the image I wanted was a substantial part of the whole, like with the example Deacs gives, but, each to their own. I prefer to save in jpg format: I can then trim quickly and more accurately; adjust orientation; and on the poorer images, play with the contrast, etc.; and you can scroll through the images easily within a folder using Picture Manager or similar, or you could go straight to the particular record that you want. Scrolling through a large pdf to find what I want would frustrate me, but if it works for you, great.

IceCream looks like an interesting utility. Chrome allows you to extract pages from a pdf with the limitation that they must retain their original order, so the ability to merge may come in useful.

Deacs, remember you can also use the Full Screen setting (F11) if you need a little larger image.

I find Ice Cream especially useful where sites offer digitised books chapter by chapter (eg AWM and Hyperwar with official histories) as you can merge them back into the original whole which makes using the index easier as well as facilitating searches. One of the problems of using JPG is that it takes up much more storage.

What a great weekend finally sorted all the Pension cards I needed am well chuffed. It also gave me a nice headache as I found another 10 casualty's I need to research that I didn't know who had a Cockermouth connection so I'd better get cracking.

    Regards Mike.

Trying my luck to see if anyone has a Fold3 membership, I saw this thread but didn't think there were any files I needed, I was just checking 2 WW1 Courts Martial and noticed they have files (no idea the contents) on Fold3 so thought I'd ask just in case (fingers crossed).
