Talking heads on TV say everyone outside the US is dying or already dead and our days are up next week.

Farewell and see you on the other side!

What you mean next week - we're given the impression that the zombies took over in 2016 - some time around November it seems

Well as a child of the 70s I've been reminded of late how often I've been warned of the impending end of the world as we know it. Given the huge increase in the ability to communicate it may be more acute now, but it doesn't feel that different in some respects from the various 'narratives' of my childhood and teens. Bloody depressing then, bloody depressing now. Five more weeks or so and I'll have survived to another milestone birthday in spite of the various incarnations of the apocalypse that I've been promised over the decades...

Well as someone whose earliest memories are of a farmhouse/rectory in rural County Sligo with no electricity or gas, only oil lamps or candles for lighting - a peat fired range for cooking and cold water hand pumped from a well (don't ask about the sanitary facilities) and almost all the local transport on two or four legs I think I can say that I have seen the end of the world as I knew it more than once in my lifetime. However given that my milestones are beginning to look like millstones and I have some of the underlying conditions that convert the current pestilence from a minor nuisance to a deadly threat (and unlike flu which I am jabbed up against there is no vaccine) I could be looking at the end of the world for me. Now there are those who could say 'you've had a good run you ald git now get out of the way' but a week ago I graduated with my second MA and this time with a distinction rather than a merit and even at my age I can see my way clear (well I will when they do the cataracts on Monday) to some useful research, so leaving early to avoid the rush does not appeal.

Nah, you'll be fine. 2% fatality rate IF you come down with it in China.
Higher survival rate in US and UK

I like those odds and I'm no spring chicken either

I was doing my best to ignore the media frenzy over the latest apocalypse but it suddenly became personal.

Given my inimitable knack for impeccable timing, I discovered just last week that I have qualified for my employer's annual incentive trip.

7 days in Athens and the Greek islands, scheduled for May 9-16, 2020. Given the escalation and panic, I'm thinking this has just about zero probability of happening.

I'm sure the esteemed members of this forum will weigh in with their own enlightened handicapping!

Absolutely no problem here in Germany. We´re always well organized and have rules for anything:
§ 307 causing an explosion by nuclear energy
    (1) Anyone who undertakes to cause an explosion by releasing nuclear energy and thereby endangering the life or limb of another person or foreign objects of significant value will be punished with a prison sentence of no less than five years.

    § 307 StGB - Einzelnorm

    HAH!

Good luck with the cataracts, Robert.
Having glasses since 5 years old and replacing them every year till 21 when they were nearly beer bottle bottom thickness, then contact lenses, I had mine done (-16 and -13) and it's incredible!
No real problems, no pain (as I was told when they repaired a torn cornea by sticking a needle in and freezing the tear...) and for anyone else worried, I'd say "Go for it" it sounds far worse than it actually is.
(Apologies as off topic, but hopefully useful info for others)

Just seen the ad at the bottom of the site is for washable incontinence knickers. Was that targeted at me or have others seen it as well. Please tell me you have also seen it.

I'm very worried that the Corona virus is going to see extended archive closures.

How will I get my fix?
