Watched it yesterday and really disappointed. It had so much potential, but trying to film it as one continuous sequence killed it for me
Last week I made a rare visit to my local cinema and saw the film. As far as I was concerned it was just super, no complaints at all. It also reminded me that in the line, in WW2, how many animals were killed and how they simply stank to high heaven. Ron
I enjoyed it but got irritated that the soldiers rarely finished their sentences with Sir when speaking to an Officer - as they would unhesitatingly have done in 1917 as they do now, and I was not impressed that the LCpl hero saluted the Commanding Officer of 2 Devons without a hat on. The Americans merrily do that but the British do not. Where was the military advisor for those bits - Half asleep? F
I thought the plot was ridiculous, but the action, scenery, equipment, etc, was excellent. Just a thought: If Blackadder hadn't eaten Speckled Jim, they could have sent the plucky pigeon with a message and saved themselves that awful journey.
Just spotted the WFA have published two reviews: 1917: Right Story, Wrong Location | The Western Front Association and Truth in the Telling: A Review of 1917 | The Western Front Association The later ends with: I plan to catch the film soon.
As a cinematographic piece it was rather good, but as a historic representation I thought it rather poor. Entertainment value to the uninitiated would probably be quite good.
My fav review was from my mate's wife's friend on FB. She said , " It was amazing to see how our boys beat Adolf Hitler." Sadly as I'm not their friend I cannot do a screenshot. My mate wet himself when he read it.
The other bit that irritated me was one of the last scenes where he is running along the front of the trench system as the battalion went over the top at speed. If an officer saw a soldier running across his front, and without a weapon, he would in all likelihood have perceived him to be a deserter. He would probably have been shot. F
I am planning to watch the film this week. One of my grandfathers was killed 1917, the other died in a French hospital in Chartres with Spanish flue just before being exchanged with a French soldier, also father of 6 children. One of hem my mum. Stefan.
1917 is now available to order on digital download - so go wash your hands, crack open a beer and give it a watch: 1917
