Look smaller scale and you can find lots. Go and look at the outsides of some of the older London museums for example and you can see pockmarks in the stone from bomb splinters and other debris
From the now extended Platform 1 of Charing Cross Station you can still see the damage done to Hungerford Bridge where it was hit by an unexploded parachute mine that went on to weld itself to the live rail.
St Thomas Church, Bath Row/Lee Bank, central Birmingham (2019 plus views past too). Bombed during the night of December 11th/12th 1940. Kind regards, always, Jim.
Not a great one for preserving every brick & piece of twisted metal - life moves on - but this is possibly a little different.
Given that facadism is all the architectural rage these days - it ought to be possible to preserve the face and still build the extension.
'Considerate constructors' - my arse! 'Considerate constructors' ...except where they want to destroy some nationally-important heritage to make a quick buck.
Thank you. Theres quite a lot out there still; St Paul's Cathedral, Southwark railway arch, V&A Museum, the Ritz, St Barts Hospital, Southwark Cathedral to name a few. One from Barts and a different slant on it. A German plane's bullet hole in Queen Victoria's statue St Leonard's on Sea
Bow Cemetery (Tower Hamlets Cemetery)was badly bombed during WW2 near the main railway and close to the gasworks.
Hello Hutt, Sorry about the late reply, I only noticed it when reading through the threads> You should have sent the message to me. Unfortunately, from what I have read, I cannot see any indication of when the damage was caused. It might be worth making an enquiry of the Essex Police Museum. I would imagine they kept incident books. RAF Rochford was attacked on many occasions. I recall going to Sutton Road Cemetery, researching the grave of a family member. I was looking for a particular burial in 1945 and asked in the office for assistance. A very helpful lady there brought to me the burial register covering that period. I was surprised to see the amount of German War Graves listed. These graves were moved after the war to the German Cemetery at Cannock Chase. Paul
