A Christmas arrangement with someone called Lulu may have been hashed out. How many times must one say 'Covenanter' before the word has been successfully noted? Four, apparently. I must practice my feigned surprise.
I read this book and it made me more than enthusiastic: So immediately decided to order Balkoski's other two books dealing with the Fall Campaign of 1944 (Ninth US Army to the Rur): Now I notice that he also has written some volumes about the Normandy/Brittany campaign ... ?
Yes, his Omaha and Utah Beaches books are well worth a read. Even the RN landing craft crews get a fair hearing! He was 29 US Div's official historian until he retired earlier in the year.
You know, this really WOULD just happen. I bought Mark Hayward's book on the Firefly (and no question it's good) and Peter Brown has another book coming out, on the Firefly. This will be a lovely book for modelers or anyone who just wants to look at photographs. There are a bunch of sample pages visible here: Armor PhotoHistory #6 Sherman Firefly I really must get a new job so I can afford to buy this before it goes out of print.
Seem to be a couple of comparatively reasonable price copies of 'A View From The Turret' on Abe. Certainly better than the usual c.£90. 9780953335916 - A View from the Turret: a History of the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment in the Second World War by Bill Close, Used - AbeBooks
Is there any difference in the text between "A View From the Turret" and "Tank Commander"? I think they're the same book under different titles? (Also a copy of "Tank Commander" is also for sale there for £11)
Some interesting finds trickled in....and I may or may not have done some damage at NMP Black Friday sale that will darken my door soonish.
Posting this as it's the only place I may get appreciation. My wife certainly doesn't share my satisfaction. 880 page door stop. Cheapest on Amazon.ca is $400, Abebooks has it at around $250 CDN Found a VG copy for $70 all in CDN. Was very chuffed with myself when it arrived. Wife not so much but how could I say no? Other new arrivals:
Drax Bezos seems to have sent out a directive from his under-volcano lair to match or beat the Haynes books that the Works is getting. A fiver for the very good Fletcher/Willey Great War Tank one is pretty ridiculous. Price of a magazine really. A few others similarly priced for those that can't face the actual shops this weekend. Great War Tank Manual: An insight into the history, development, production and role of the main British Army tank of the First World War (Owners' Workshop Manual)
Hope you enjoy the Kubelwagen one. I thought it was rather good. Herr Vollert scores a consistently high rating with me.
He does great work. I’m hoping there are some more WW2 releases coming up in 2020 as most of their recent material has been postwar.
Thanks Orwell. Thanks for Nothing. I had to look at the 'Naval and Military Press' website didn't I. I'm now £40 lighter, with 6 books on the way.
Peace Brother Mark - renounce worldly wealth. Pop down to Oxfam and get a brown dressing gown and some old sandals, Get used to living on porridge and water and retire to a nice quiet cave or cell in the woods with as many books as you can carry.
