Question regarding bombed hospital ships.

Discussion in 'General' started by Mrs Carla Cova, Dec 5, 2019.

  1. Hi all, me again! So having questioned the family some more, they seem to remember my grandad (Fred Rush) saying that he was on a hospital ship that was bombed and that he escaped. We know he served in North Africa. Does anyone know of any hospital ships that were bombed in that area? How can I look into this more?
    TIA

Not to mention bombed but not hit. However most if not all hospital ships taking casualties from North Africa back to the UK before the collapse of Italy went the long way round (down the Canal - Red Sea - Cape Town - Atlantic) to avoid the risk. Ships evacuating wounded from say Tobruk back to Alexandria would still be at risk but would be a smaller number to search for, as ever it's a case of needing more info.

  5. According to his records he was admitted to hospital
    2may-28june 1941,
    19sept-12 Oct 1942,
    7th July-12 Aug 1943,
Treated for a gun shot wound in 1944 but not hospital record for this,
    2 jan-19feb 1945
After this is says posted to acc/bd. Tc x(IV) a which I can't decipher. He was then struck off strength to UK so came home.

I don't know if any of that info is helpful. I will try to look through the ships list and work out if any had been the area at those times.

Could he have been on the ABA, bombed in Naples Harbour but did set sail afterwards? See thread on Cpl. J.A. Owens 27/ Middlesex Regiment.

  7. Thanks I will look into that on too
I'm currently reading about ss vita which was bombed and then towed back to safety. Do you think there would be records to confirm our theories? There were a lot of hospital ships in the tobruk area that were attacked so its hard to safe if he was on any of them.
