Very interesting prog BBC One - The Richard Dimbleby Lecture, Sir Tim Berners-Lee: The World Wide Web - A Mid-Course Correction "He wove the World Wide Web and created a mass medium for the 21st century. The World Wide Web is Berners-Lee's alone. He designed it. He loosed it on the world. And he more than anyone else has fought to keep it open, nonproprietary and free." Tim Berners-Lee - Wikipedia
As someone who can remember having to use the Internet before the WWW I would agree. Unfortunately I found the talk disappointing, his speaking style didn't help and his solution appeared to be mainly we all need to try to be nicer and more vigilant - a bit mom and apple pie
Well at least it gives the younger generation a simple view on how it all started. We cant be all like you and I who can easily shout our mouths off no matter what the subject .
I generally concur. A genius with some eccentricity (speaking style) thrown in who, in my mind, expressed a degree of frustration with how his invention (positive) has worked out in practice (aspects of negative) but put across in a calm and, to a degree, naive ultra-logical style. His bottom line is, of course, correct and let's hope it stays that way: the WWW is a marvellous piece of technology to which we all owe a great deal albeit with a dose of (expected because they get everywhere) scumbags thrown in.
I thought the lecture was very interesting (I've now watched it twice) but I agree that he is having some problem with his verbal delivery. I also spent a couple of hours this afternoon playing with "Solid", his decentralised web project which may help us regain control of our data. At the moment it is still more of a developers playground, than a useful environment for users. And its going to be an uphill struggle to convince people to move away from the tech giants (...actually its a struggle to convince most people that there is a problem).
