    Understood.

To be clear, in that circumstance it was a gain--duplication there is not a problem. It's the next item on the list that could be an issue.

    Price quoted recently.

For a publication of less than 5k vol worldwide in English, £34.50 + VAT.
With ebook of the same multiply by 1.2.

    Book is £41.40.
So ebook is £49.68 all in (or whereabouts).

Order more than 10 you get a 10% discount.
More than 20 you get 20%.

Still savagely expensive compared to others, thus encouraging generi-history over great new publications. Not that management care as YOLO.

That said, the staff remain fantastic and helpful as ever.

Oh dear! I have now seen a couple of instances where they are only showing the caption and not the image it refers to (e.g. BU 981)

Just received a quote for a 'personal use' image.

    Digitisation fee: £30
For an A3 digital file: £20
VAT @ 20% (not charged on overseas orders): £10
    Total: £60 per image.

I've found an old quotation that matches in all respects. .

They've actually reduced the cost very sightly, these two additional charges having been dropped:

    Delivery - Files via FTP - £1.00
    Image License Non-Commercial Private - £1.00

    Every little helps!

A further update on what is emerging as a spicy saga.

IWM are now prohibiting access to any image that has been digitised. So if it's on their online catalog, then you cannot view it in person.

From the wording I have seen this is flat out forbidden now.

So images such as this, which are clearly of much lower quality than previously digitised images...

RETURN OF REFUGEES AND TYPHOONS SHOOT UP GERMAN MOTORISED AND HORSE-DRAWN COLUMNS

Well you won't be able to scrutinise them in person looking for details etc, as it's digitised. Requests to view such material are flat out refused.

Appointments to view undigitised photos are only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The standing joke, amongst those of us who use the collections, are that the IWM don't really know what is in their own catalog and many images are miscataloged themselves, thus requesting to see images which they don't know they have is the point of farce and they broadly fall through the net.

    ****

What. A. Joke. From the institution that is meant to be the premier guardian of our military related heritage.

Good job Heimdal copied a lot of them in better quality!

If you want you can tell them they have mixed up B7552
TANKS AND INFANTRY CROSS THE RIVER ORNE

    with B7791.
THE BRITISH ARMY IN NORMANDY 1944

The captions are correct but the images have been switched and it is an old mistake that long predates the current uploads. In my experience they never correct any mistake you point out to them so I never bother telling them any more.
You have to be a really sad anorak to catch that type of error!

I had an excellent experience when visiting the IWM reading rooms a few years ago and a lot of help from the staff present on that day. But, as we have mentioned many times on the forum, they simply do not have the correct ethos as an organisation in regards sharing and opening up the various collections to the public. Compared to their counterparts in Australia, Canada (this one's for Chris C) and the USA, they are woeful in their attitude.

When I first visited the IWM Film Section many centuries back they must have took pity on me. I viewed dozens of films but the prices were so steep that I had to be very selective in ordering. Anyway when I got my films they had charged me the 'Veterans Rate' which was a massive saving. I know it was not a simple accounting error because I had a long conversation with my 'reel changer' and he knew all me. I guess that proves if you turn up looking like you had to walk all the way because you could not afford the bus fare it can melt their hearts. Unfortunately it did not work at The Sikorski Institute and they just took my order and then decided it was not worth the effort and did not send me a thing!
My best experience was The REME Museum. They provided 10 x 6 glossies at cost plus about £5 for my whole order and they also photocopied a report and because the original was faded went through it and wrote in all the missing words.
The best-selling 1970s author who charged me £20 each for photos from his collection shall remain nameless!

    Wow, that is insane. :(

Not to make you feel worse, but in Canada there are no such restrictions, viewing days are M-F.

I phoned to pay early last week and gave the quotation reference to the chap in the IWM Images department. He pulled up the details on his computer and asked whether I knew the total and I replied, "I'm sorry to say that it seems to be £50."

He did, to his credit, sound a little put out and pretty genuine when he said, "Yeah, I'm sorry about that."

It wasn't completely clear whether he was referring to the digitisation fee or the total cost, but I'd like to think that the staff there are at least reluctant participants in the rip-off.

Once nobody's using it, they'll have the excuse they need to stop the service or just shut up shop. I assume the Germans have told us to stop embarrassing them...

There seems to have been a change in the website. Right-clicking seems to be blocked, so the only way I can think to save an image to disk would be to take a screenshot. (Which is idiotic.)

You can save an image in two ways - right click the thumbnail which appears in search results or open the item, click on the "use image" box [below and to the right of the image] then click on "download". I don't know if both methods work for all images but have just tried it on five different images.

Perhaps a little off piste from the discussion in this thread but I thought I would throw it in anyhow. I had a rant about the exorbitant cost of IWM media licensing fees a few months back (thread was Copying Files from the British Library) and mentioned that I said I was writing to the Chairman of Trustees to complain. In due course I received a polite reply from the DG IWM, in which she mentioned among other things that the museum is governed by strict Public Sector Info regulations and that if the license costs were reduced the museum would be offering its services at a loss and would be open to a challenge via the Information Commissioner's Office. That was rather lost on me but all I know is that both the IWM and I are losers as I could only afford licences for 2 photos! Deeply disappointing as there were many photos I would loved to have used in my book. Perhaps the IWM will be nationalised after 12 December!

Usually the downloaded image will be lower quality than a screen grab.

Fireshot is quite handy if you're using Firefox and a normal 'save' doesn't work.

  19. Has anyone ordered an analogue print of an IWM photo recently, if this is still possible at all? I mean last century's technology of a paper print directly from the negative. If so, what was the cost?

Maybe it's something to do with being overseas. When I click on "Use Image" I don't get a "Download" option.
