  1. Barry, I think the H+45 bit is missing.
You mentioned using a word processor for editing your tables. I find spreadsheets easier to handle, but I guess it's up to what one is best used to :).

Hello to all on this fabulous forum thread. I am particularly interested in LST 239, and her LTIN serial 1150, as my wife's uncle, Jack Loader was on board her for D-Day, and Mentioned in Dispatches at that time, Are there any images of LST 239 and details of her load? I am going to the D-Day museum in Southsea tomorrow with Jack's brother, my father in law, and would love to know more details. Thanks, David.

  4. Unfortunately I could not find any photo of LST 239 (Serial 1150). She was part of 9 LST Flotilla, Assault Group J3. She was planned to load at S Two Hard (West) at 1200 D-3 (i.e. 2 Jun 44).

She sailed in Group 332 (Code Word"MILKY WAY"). I'll refer you to the various posts by Trux on this group in this thread:
    Force J. Assault Group J3.
9 Canadian Brigade. Naval Assault Group J3..
    The LSTs arrive..
    Force ‘J’ Post Assault.

Her Commander is given by the excellent uboat.net website as Lt.Cdr. George Austin Moore, RD, RNR:
HMS LST 239 (LST 239) of the Royal Navy - British Tank landing ship of the LST (Mk 2) class - Allied Warships of WWII - uboat.net

LST 239 was of the two-davit type.

I attach the Landing Table dated 2 May 44. Later (very minor) amendments to this version for this Serial included:

    Amendment No.1 10 May 44 – 242 Pro Coy : Amend Coln H – For " 33 M/Cycles" Read "49 M/Cycles"
    Amendment No.2 15 May 44 – 'D' Coy CH of O (MG) : Delete Coln H – All detail; Amend Coln F – Will now read 75
    Amendment No.3 17 May 44 – 2 R M A S Regt : Amend Coln F – For " 2 " Read " 4 "

Note however that there might have been later amendments, and that the actual loading may have varied from the planned one.

    What was Jack Loader's unit?

Michael - Thank you so much for taking the trouble to dig those out. I did find them myself through a link on another page of this forum late yesterday afternoon, but was then out for the evening, and have only now been able to look at them.

Jack Loader was part of the Royal Navy crew of HM LST 239. He was twice Gazetted:

Mentioned in Despatches 27 Feb 1945 (Temporary Leading Seaman)
For courage, endurance and determination in transporting stores, vehicles and men in LST’s and LCT’s and other vessels to the Normandy Beaches.

Mentioned in Despatches 14 June 1945 (Temporary Acting Petty Officer)
    King’s Birthday Honours, June 1945, HM LST-239

I served with 20 Maritime Regt. RCT, and 17 Port Regt. RCT in the 1980's, on HMAV Arakan, and as a Mexeflote coxswain.

Many thanks again - I am looking forward to sharing this information with Jack's brother!

  8. David,

Since my last post above I was fortunate enough to find some photos of LST 239 after D Day, embarking Churchills tanks of 3 Scots Guards. See Account: 3rd Tank Bn Scots Guards, Jul 1944 - May 1945
For that trip her load was List Index TT1304. She still wears her D Day livery with the 10 foot red square (meaning a ship bound for JUNO) around the hull number on her bows.

  9. I've just uploaded (finally!) my transcription of the April 1944 Landing Table for JUNO in the Resources.

Since this Landing Table was superseded by a more recent version (dated 2 May 44 plus subsequent Amendments) involving important changes, it should be used with caution and as reference only.

Now to transcribe the newer version...

Sorry, I tried to edit the above to make it a bit more readable. (Landing Craft numbers in order) but “time ran out” and it wouldn’t let me complete the edit.

Hopefully everyone understands the above, if they need the info

    Cheers

Thank you Roy.....I’ve been thru all of Trux’s information, and I believe he does give us all the Landing Craft Flotilla’s for each vessel, but not the individual landing craft assigned to a specific Flotilla. I may have “missed it”.....but I’ve been searching for the individual landing craft numbers for years (and had obtained quite a few, from this web site and others)....but the documents from the British National Archives (Green List’s) were the first time I’d seen a complete listing of all the Flotilla’s and their assigned craft for Jun 1944 (I had seen Green Lists for Jan 1944......and that’s what triggered my request for the documents from the BNA). Other’s may have had this information before and I just didn’t see it when googling or doing site searches (on this site and others)

Anyway, the above does “centralize” the numbers all in one spot, so to speak.....and hopefully when someone is googling info on the numbers this will help.

    Cheers

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me?

Looking for any information on my Grandfathers unit.

He was called up in 1943 at the age of 38 and was enlisted into the Royal Marines

My Grandfather was rated as a driver in LCVP Flotilla 800, whilst alive he did not talk about to us about the war but he did mention a few ditties to my father.

He mentions the poor guys facing the fire storm when the ramp went down, explaining that as driver he kept his head down at the back.

He also mentioned a possible capsize on the beach don't know if that was his LC or another, he also mentioned the picking up of debris/stores in particular barrels of rum, which they were told to leave alone as they could be booby trapped by the Germans, despite that warning I understand spirits and cigarettes were re patriated regularly.

His service record put him in Royal Marines 800 Flotilla on D-Day, I don't know what particular craft, he was based at HMS Lizard (Shoreham) during that period.

I have been to Kew but struggled to find reference, other than designation of LC numbers and general plans for Overlord etc.

I am particularly interested in the Canadian units he may have landed, ideally the landing craft he actually crewed, although I suspect that is unlikely to achieve.

Any information on activity other than landing during the campaign would be helpful, from your forum it mentions they crossed the Channel the night before D-Day, I assume they were empty then ferried troops from ship to shore, any info or pointers for further research would be very welcome, my father is now 89 it would be nice to give him the full picture.

  17. The Green List dated 5 Jun 44 provides the composition of 800 Build up Flotilla, "A" Build up Squadron, as follows (16 craft located on Hayling Island and allocated to HMS Northney):

    LCV(P) 1005, 1006, 1007, 1008, 1009, 1010, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1015, 1023, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027 &1055

Unfortunately I have no photo of any of these craft.

  19. You're very welcome Russell. Trux here did all the work.

I just found on IWM Film ADM 1264 a short sequence (at 03:49) showing four LCV(P) from "A" Build up Squadron off SWORD Area. The craft on the left has a dark (probably Red) square located top starboard of the ramp, denoting 804 Build up Flotilla, while the Red (?) disk on the other three craft means 800 Build up Flot. Second from left is LCV(P) 1025. So, the odds are 3:16 that your grandfather is on this clip!:D
    LCVP 1025 800 BU Flot, 804 BU Flot - ADM 1264 - 480 - 1944-06 - 03.49 - 042.jpg

The other two Flotillas in "A" Sqn had a triangle (801 Flot) and diamond (802 Flot) respectively.

In case you do not know it yet, there is a lengthy interview (12 reels!) of a veteran of 802 Build up Flotilla on the IWM website:
