A guilty pleasures of mine is watching the UK version of The Apprentice. One of the tasks last week was to find a pre-WWII book from the Alice in Wonderland collection. Out of about seven people in one of the teams, none of them knew when WWII took place.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy in the category Military Slang for Thursday, May 21, 2020.

This word for high-ranking officials comes from a metal used in 19th century military insignia.

I don't know if the word was used in UK forces but sure was widely used but US ones and is in every WWII Hollywood movie ever made.

If you are referring to brass then the use of the word originated here in the 19th century with the use of brass and gilt decorations on senior officers hats - hence the term Brass Hats - Top Brass etc

Here is a question that I have never had a satisfactory answer to.

When they built the London Underground how did they get the trains down the escalators?

It is easy to get them to go down the escalator. The hard part is getting them to come back up when they are all worn out.
