hello folks I have been doing my family tree and also been researching information about my great grandfather Douglas greig, he was married to Helen Ross in Aberdeen and that’s where the lived, but I know he was based out of Portsmouth but went back upto Aberdeen because that’s where the Germans were going to bomb. I know he was on the Hood ship and was a petty officer?? If anyone could help me find information that would be great. I have got his medals but I’m not sure what ones he should have been given. If anyone could help me that would be amazing! Thanks Ross
apply for his service records date of birth and death certificate required what info do you have that states he served on HMS Hood? Get a copy of military service records
My grandfather told me and and so did my great uncle, he was also in the Russian convoy, I also know he was on a ship protecting an aircraft carrier from the japs camicasi pilots.
The medals I have of my great grandfathers are the Italy star and the Burma star with the Pacific clasp
Perfect thank you Where else would you get information on my great granda? Is the gov site really good??
you have to send off for the records at a cost of £30 .The forms are on the site and it explains how to do it you will not find any info about him on the internet even though some sites say they have info you will be conned out of your money
He would be entitled to more as the Burma star needed 1939-45 star earned first which was 6 months and the war medal was awarded after 28 days you need to write to the mod medal office (it’s free) the form is on the mod .gov site google claiming ww2 medals they will tell you what medals and when issued. If they weren’t issued then NoK can apply to have them issued if he was indeed on arctic convoys then he would be entitled to the new arctic star regards james
The HMS Hood Association have a website that lists aprox half of the 9000+ men who served on the ship during her career. Douglas Greig is not on the current list, but there is useful information on the site. H.M.S. Hood Association-Battle Cruiser Hood: Crew Information - H.M.S. Hood Crew List
He is missing at least 2. the war medal was issued to every service person after 28 days service the Burma star needed the 39-45 star earnt first. I would definitely enquire with the mod medal office.
