The khaki hats are more likely to be Caps GS (a bit like a tam o'shanter without the toorie/bobble) than a beret. Khaki berets were only authorised for Motor Battalions and - mid-war - the Recce Regiment.

What is the regiment boarding the ship?

I'd say it was impossible to tell unless you can get a really sharp screen shot of cap badge or any insignia on upper arm.

Yes I spent time trying to get the Council, then Radio Solent, The Echo etc interested; but didn't even get a response! I eventually did a talk and Power Point presentation. I have written a book on Merchantmen at Normandy. Incidentally the main assembly point was the Solent - a somewhat telescoped plan attached.

C W Kingdon wrote in the Daily Sketch on 7 June 1944 'it knocked the most impressive peacetime Naval Review into a cocked hat' He was one of the Merchant Navy reporters; all but the Daily Worker were allowed to send correspondents - their coverage makes interesting reading

I was simply responding to your complaint. Owen was the one with useful advice.
