Having trouble finding any info on L.E Smithers who served with the 2nd battalion lincs but was seconded to another unit at or around d-day
If you obtain his service records they will answer your question - MOD link for application forms Request records of deceased service personnel TD
I have the nominal rolls of the Lincoln's, containing 20,000 + names, but looking for his name in the chance he may have served, is too time consuming. A three month wait to get correct details from the MOD, is well worth doing. Many have assumed things about their relatives and got things totally wrong. I'm about to do this process for another family of a Lincoln soldier, who will be sending copies for me to interpret and the guy is quite excited, having spent many fruitless years looking.
I get what you're saying. I do appreciate you taking the time out to help. All I have is his service number 5834907 he was in C coy, 2nd Batt the Lincolnshire regiment. The gentleman concerned survived the war but passed last year and his gran daughter asked if when I go over to Normandy I would put a stone on where he came ashore. Hence the request.
As you know you will not find any info on the internet about him personally, thats why if your trying to help them you need to encourage them to send off for his service records.
Army Number to check: The army number: 5834907 indicates that the soldier's original unit or date joined was: "Suffolk Regiment"
5834907 shows he enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment. Army Number Block Allocations Suffolk Regiment 5819001 - 5875000
I thought my Dad's unit arrived on Sword beach and our family visited the area so i collected a few pebbles. It turned out he landed on Juno beach. I found out this information from landing tables (departure from Tilbury) and difficult to find. It shows that even with good research can go slightly wrong. I plan to go to Juno beach with 4jonboy's husband one day soon. His dad landed On Juno beach on D-day so we have a common goal.
I can start to narrow the search for the nominal roll for this man, as there are lists for Other (service) numbers. It will take a little while to find it.
Rob, I realise that you need a service number, two potential names? SMITHERS Laurence Edmond (1923 Paddington, London -2016 Sittingbourne, Kent) SMITHERS Lionel Edward (1919 Sevenoaks, Kent) Best of British Guy
I have found your man. By telling me his service number, I found his name in the fourth book of names. Laurence Edward SMITHERS. Joins the Lincolns from 1943 onward. From book reference REGI 3-23 from the Lincoln archives. He was discharged on 7 March 1945. 2 Lincolns were taking part in Op Veritable at the time. "A soldier who has been found physically unfit by a medical board is discharged from Army service under King's Regulations, 1940, paragraph 390 (xvi) as "ceasing to fulfil Army physical requirements."
That is fantastic. Thank you so much. Is there anyway of finding out what it was that made him unfit?

At the risk of repeating what other members have already said, " Apply for the service records". As much as we would like, we can't provide all the answers unless you do that.
