Does anyone have any knowledge of, or information regarding Leopard Box at Kanglatongbi north of Imphal?
It was at a small village called Safarmaina milestone 115 area on the main Imphal Dimapur road. A defensive area commanded by the OC of 25 Reinforcement Camp (whose name escapes me at the moment) and included mostly non-combatant units. What date are you interested in? Lionboxer
I am very pleased that you have picked up on this thread and was beginning to think that I wouldn't get a response. I was aware of the Lion Box and having read your book, I was aware that you had made a passing reference to Lynx Box. I am guessing that any defensive boxes in this sector began with the letter 'L'. I have been unable to find any references to Leopard Box in any official publication or on line. A War Diary has recently come to light after a house clearance and, as far as I can tell, it is the only copy, but research may prove me wrong. It paints a vivid picture of events in Imphal and particularly the Leopard Box between 17th March and 25th April 1944. It is the War Diary of a small non-combatant unit and it would seem that the Commanding Officer did not hand the original diary in, or perhaps handed in a copy, keeping the original for his records.
HW, as you can imagine this is of enormous interest to me as I’m busy writing a new book about those events. PM me please! Lionboxer
There are a number of mentions of it and lists of the units in it in the War Diary for 256 LOC. There is a trace of it showing a location west of the road and north of Lion Box at Kanglatombi. It closed April 3rd.
Thank you for the update. There have been some developments off line and I will post a new thread in due course.
Thank you for your kind offer but I have 'The War Diary' or at very least a contemporary copy of it, both hand written and type written by the Commanding Officer, which has appeared out of the woodwork. I am waiting to see how it compares with the copy held at the National Archives.
