Hi, I am researching the Indian Anti-Aircraft Artillery in the WW2. Will be thankful for any leads/information/documents and even a reference (about information on Indian AAA). Thanks, Mandeep
There are not many sources on this topic. Here are some though. Farndale, Sir Martin. History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery: Volume VI: The Far East Theatre 1941-46. London: Brassey’s, 2000. (Contains information on Indian AA units) Palit, Maj. Gen. D.K.History of the Regiment of Artillery, Indian Army. London: Leo Cooper, 1971. (Toronto Public Library)(British Museum, India and Oriental)(Limited though useful) Sawyer, Major H.Y. The Anti-Aircraft Branch of the Indian Artillery, 1940 to 1947. 1983. (This is a short booklet that I saw at the National Army Museum in London) Kempton, Chris. A Register of Titles of the Units of the H.E.I.C. & Indian Armires. 1666-1947.Bristol: British Empire and Commonwealth Museum, 1997. (Comprehensive list of units and batteries but otherwise limited) You might also try searching some of the threads in the forum. I have contributed to a number on Indian Anti-Aircraft artillery. This may give you some further leads.
Welcome Mandeep A few threads on the forum below might be helpful to you if you do a further search on the forum a number of related threads come up 3rd Indian Light AA Regiment 9th Anti-Aircraft Brigade, RA - 3rd Indian Anti-Aircraft Brigade Indian Light AA/Anti Tank Regiments regards Clive
There are, of course, the unit war diaries at the [UK] National Archives. This may not be all of them: Search results: "Indian artillery" | The National Archives If it suits your interest, there are a couple of members here who offer a much cheaper copying service than the Archives.
Thank you for posting the link. I am interested in getting the copies of the documents- could you please refer the members who offer this service. Thanks
That'll be Drew5233 (Andy) and Psywar (Lee). 'Cheaper' is relative - per page they are very competitive but the diaries can range from brief notes to folders full of appendices and attachments! Also note they just copy, it's not research service. Andy is also on Facebook as 'British Army War Diary Copying Service', but read British as Commonwealth.
Hi Mandeep I've been researching the Indian AA for a while now. As you have discovered there is not much published. I have copied all brigade and most regimental and battery war diaries at Kew, a few still to go. I've also copied other files from higher formations and commands. I'm working my way through this lot piecing unit histories together in a database. That said, there are still many gaps, notably the 1941-1943 period. I have found that published sources contain many errors and omissions so I would be very wary of these. I would be happy to help, if I can, with any queries you may have regarding specific units My work isn't complete yet and I'm not yet certain how I will share any finished product when it is. Please contact me directly if you wish Steve
