Has anyone read a book titled "Straight from the Horsa's Mouth" by Ted Hold? Does he go into any detail about Normandy? Can you tell me what unit he was assigned to? Thanks Ttyman
Ttyman, Sorry I don't have the book, but from what I can gather he was with 6th Airborne Signals. There is a nice picture of Ted Hold at the 70th D-Day Commemoration with a young lady. Just joined ww2talk. Ted Hold was my Dad and I helped him prepare his book for publication. He was a Signalman with 6th AB Div HQ throughout the war, Ranville 03:25 D-Day by Horsa, Ardennes Xmas 1944, Rhine crossing by Horsa, advance across Europe to the Baltic and finally Palestine. Google “Ted Hold Normandy” for photos and articles also “Cornwall Normandy Veterans” for his meeting with HRH Duchess of Cornwall and subsequent interview at Ranville in 2014. Any questions please ask. My Dad passed away August 2017.
Hi Did your dad ever write anything about the Rhine crossing? The Kopenhof farm was used for 6 AB Div HQ on Op Varsity, I’m friends with the current owners! Alex
He didn’t mention the farm by name but ended the day at one so that was probably it. I’m going to send you the five pages he wrote about the Rhine.
Thanks Tony. I have just ordered a copy of the book that I found online. Will take a while to get here so thanks for those pages, much appreciated. Alex
That passage just confirms that Glider Pilots really were the 'Total Soldiers' as expected of them from the formation of the GPR. Just look at the roles he carried out; Pilot, Medic, Radio Mech, Sapper, Cook and Bomb disposal, all done whilst also expecting to operate as an infantryman.
