I asked my grandfather if he wanted to apply for his service record and he said no to let sleeping dogs lie. I was disappointed to learn that after his death in the early 1990s a family member sent for them. However, my query is would they have been sent original records or a copy please? I was told this person had the originals. Thank you

His official Service Record will still be held by the Ministry of Defence. If this is what you are talking about then the family member will only have a copy. If your grandfather died over 25 years ago you can obtain a full copy yourself.
Get a copy of military service records
You do not need the Next of Kin Form. Just complete Forms 1 & 2. You will need his date of birth plus a copy of his death certificate. If you don't have access to his death certificate you can get a copy online.
Order a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate

Thank you I have the death certificate. I will do that many thanks again. There was an awol he didn’t want us to see but it was to see his new baby and he couldn’t get leave so he nipped home and then did the time. I am interested in it showing more detail of his pre War travels as he was a regular. Thank you again

    Hi,

The “copy” previously provided by MOD was a typed summary.

Under FOI MOD now provide original documents. Well worth £30.

As Steve has said, back in the 1990's, it is likely that a one page typed summary would have been sent out to the family. You should receive copies of the original documents this time around.

They had several pages of hand written info obtained in 1995 but I wonder if it was got via the regiment because there was someone there who seemed to be able to acquire info so we say. Anyhow yes thank you for this it is just over 24 years since gransha died so I will pursue things

As it is less than 25 years since your grandad died you will need to complete the Next of Kin Form to get the full Records.
