Hi all,I wonder if I could tap into your military knowledge? both my father (James Docherty) and his brother John both served in WW2,my father served with the royal artillery and uncle John with the A&SH,John was killed in 1942 in India and is buried in Kohima cemetery. a few days ago an elderly relative (my dad's brother in law) passed away and when my cousin was clearing the house he came across these pictures,i know this might seem a bit strange but seeing as I never met John nor ever seen a photo of him I don't know how similar his facial features were to my father,i've also never seen a photo of my father when he was young so going by these pictures and the regiments the two men served with is it possible to tell if these pics are my father or my uncle John. Apologies for the rather odd request. Regards.
Well, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but: The second photo shows an Allied star on the bonnet of the truck. This was for aerial recognition and I believe places the photo in Northwest Europe in 1944-45. Maybe someone can identify the gun in the third photo?
Thanks Chris,my father was posted to Europe in September 1944,can I take it that my father is in that pic?
Hi First pic is definitely royal Artillery. Bottom one is of a light anti aircraft gun. You can see the magazine on the top. My guess is its Bofors. The star on the bonnet in pic two was to stop being them shot at by allied Air force planes. Hope this helps. Gus
Thank you all very much for your valuable information,i can now be quite sure that its my father in the photo's,and very smart he looks. kind regards,John.
Thanks again for your answers to my past enquiry, these are a few more photos I received recently concerning my Dads service in WW2. any information you can give re the photos would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, Top is Berlin Olympic Stadium - middle panel has been amended (see attached). https://www.welcome-to-berlin.com/e...st-attractions/950-olympiastadion-berlin.html Regards Bruneval
The image with the two highlanders in ceremonial dress is intriguing. The taller man appears to have a Gordon Highlanders badge on his sporran and an Argyll and Sutherland highlanders badge on his plaid, whilst the shorter man on the left appears to have a Black Watch badge on his plaid and is missing a button on his tunic. The badges on their bonnets are not discernible. Possibly they dressed up a bit for the photograph. Everything they are wearing looks mismatched. Scott
