One idea - dont use the site you went to to find that information - they will only have access to publically accessible details which you already have .

I have gone back through the thread and I cannot see that you have applied for his actual service records - Request records of deceased service personnel they might clear up some questions you have

    TD

It might also clear up his middle name - is he Joseph Walker or Joseph Walter

Thank you, I had no idea this was possible. I will look into this!

    Thanks again :)

Then I look'd up the map someone shared in this thread and the woods are still there. I will take a field trip and have a look around and see if there are any signs of battle are there. Interest for any pictures to share when I have pictures ? (the pinpoint on the map is the little place "Hoven" )

Attached a certifcate of Mariage: Joseph Walker Montgomery

I received the war diaries of the 6th Cameronians. Now I can compare this with the scanned pages from the book in this thread. I’ll see what I can come up with. Thank you so far!

I will Stu. Right now I'm looking what kind of form I should use and how to send it from The Netherlands etc etc.
    I'll be back ;-)

I've never used or quoted Wikipedia (some other forum members may differ from my point of view?) I do appreciate that it is each to there own. It may be wise to stick to the War diaries that you have got, & take it from there. You have plenty of more important reading to be on with. One step at a time.:)

I can't find out how to transfer the 30 pounds. My bank doesn't have cheques etc etc. I can't seem to find how to make a foreign payment so I first used the contact form on the gov.uk website.

    JanThijs,

I may have a answer to your problem regarding cheques? I still use them! If you wish to start a conversation with me, then we may be able to sort something out? If this is last hurdle that you need to get over about obtaining his Service Records, then I'm willing to do my bit!

    Stu,
The application to the MOD for records was sent off with my cheque on 3rd January, 2019. Still waiting to hear back. Jan is helping me with obtaining a book in Dutch ( can't read it, but got a large dictionary!) written by a survivor of the Hofuku Maru and in searching for records at the Dutch Nationaal Archief or other archives in Holland on other matters. He was very generous with his suggestions as to how to compensate me for this minor service. John

    Hi John,

it looks as if you beat me to it. I'm sure that Jan will come back in time when he receives the Service Records. I do look forward to seeing them! Someone had to make the offer & I'm glad that you did..

After a lot of reading and searching and well, lot's of other stuff, I think that JW Montgomery got killed in action at 10 december 1944. The war diaries show no casualties before this date. The 12th was a potrol and a minefield, there were casualties. So I think it's pretty save to say one of them must have been JW Montgomery.

On page 1 in this there is a map showing the area of hochheid. The had to hold the line towards Geilenkirchen.
I've visited this area and found the foxholes at spot B.
I'll post the pictues somewhere tomorrow.

These images show the road to the forest. The foxholes are from area B as shown on the drawn map. It has a clear view of the field were, if I believe the story from the book posted in this thread, were minefields.
Foxholes are really along the whole line.
In a few weeks I'll be back to look for the other locations.

Following receipt of the Army records as long ago as last April I contacted Commonwealth War Graves who corrected their records. I was told by CWGC that a niece of the deceased had also contacted them with documentary evidence as to the correct name. I have also contacted the organiser of the Stichting War Cemetery, Brunssum. I have yet to discover the name of the niece. I will not be posting a copy of the records without the consent of the family.
