I'm assisting a family looking for info on the following soldier: 7595103 William David Smith. 18th Division Ordnance Workshops. He was captured at the fall of Singapore and held POW for the rest of the war. Could anyone provide an image of his POW index card please. Any help gratefully received.
They are also on Ancestry as well but you need Fold3 membership which I do not have - the files for him on Ancestry in this database are: UK, Allied Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: William Smith [David Smith] Nationality: British Rank: CORPORAL Birth Date: 24 Jul 1916 Birth Place: Salisbury, Wiltshire, ENGLAND Military Date: 1939-1945 Military Place: Singapore Regiment: 18 Div RAOC ARMY Service Number: 7595103 Father: David Mother: Gertrude Source Description: 48: Japanese Index Cards of Allied Prisoners of War and Internees, World War II: Smith F-Spencer Name: William David Smith Rank: Cpl Military Date: 1939-1945 Service Branch: A Service Number: 7595103 Source Description: 2196: Prisoners of War, Far East: British POWs in Thailand & Saigon as of August 1945; Nominal Roll Name: William David Smith Rank: Cpl Military Date: 1939-1945 Service Branch: A Service Number: 7595103 Source Description: 2172: Prisoners of War, Far East: Allied POW Camps in Thailand; Nominal Rolls Name: William David Smith Rank: Cpl Military Date: 1939-1945 Service Branch: A Service Number: 7595103 Source Description: 1955: Prisoners of War, Far East: Thailand POW Camp, Name List, as of 1 November 1944; Volume II Name: William David Smith Rank: Cpl Military Date: 15 Feb 1942 Service Branch: A Service Number: 7595103 Source Description: 26: British Prisoners of War Held in Japan or Japanese-Occupied Territory: R - Z Hope someone picks up on this TD Isnt there a free weekend on FMP - Findmypast
I was at the England vs Japan game today at Twickenham and met a family, we got chatting and here we end up. Thanks again.
You've probably seen it, but just in case Smith, William David Tim Edit. Add: 20/03/42 Transported overland Singapore to Thailand in 'D' Force. S Database
Thanks Tim, I did have this, but had not connected it to D Force though. Using all the details gathered from the documentation available on line has allowed me to prepare a short one A4 page summary of William's journey from boarding his transport ship to Singapore, probably at Capetown, to him arriving back in the UK at Southampton. The family will be extremely pleased and interested to read it all I'm sure. Steve
Once again you may have this info. Sailed from Gourock (31/10/41) or Liverpool (30/10/41) to Halifax as part of Convoy CT5. Halifax to Capetown on board USS Mount Vernon as part of Convoy WS12X (Troop Deployment puts 18 Div Ordnance Workshop RAOC on the Mount Vernon). Mount Vernon joins convoy DM1 to Singapore. More info: Convoy William Sail 12X Tim
Have downloaded 11 docs relating to your man from FMP. Send me your e-mail addy and I'll send them if you still need them.
Thanks to everyone once again. All I am short of now, is a copy of William's Japanese index card. I can pick this up from Kew at some point in the near future.
Do you need his shoe & collar size or can that wait until later as well? Respect to all who added to this thread TD
Won't that be in the chaps AB64? On a more serious note, this thread epitomises what this Forum is all about. Well done to all.
Can anyone check on FMP to see if there are any details for the following soldier please in the British India Office Deaths and Burials or elsewhere. I'm trying to find out how he died:
I've never checked those records before so was glad to have a wee look, need to see if I can use it for any of my own research now
Thanks to both of you. Very kind and speedy replies. This is a new Chindit family enquiry I'm dealing with just now. Cheers Steve
They can be a bit hit and miss, especially for that year (1944). On the same page provided there are three Chindits including my man, so it was a treble win for me.
Any others just ask (on here or by PM) - using that record set I've managed to find someone whose service book I have died of Enteric Fever so your question has helped me too
