    Paul,

Many thanks for the great photographs.

It is over 10 years since I last visited Duxford and it appears to have grown, especially in the Hall where the army vehicles were displayed.

    Regards
    Tom

    Thanks for the Photos Paul.

The best thing about Duxford is the constantly adding to the Displays. There are several that are new to me in the five years since my last visit.
Also as a "Friend" admission is free.

Closebye the I.W.M. have an Archive that I believe is the overflow from London.

Nice photographs Paul, did you by any change took the Horsa, as I want to know if there is a Mod tag above the cockpit door?, if not does anyone else go to the museum shortly?

There was the nose section of a Horsa in the Airborne Museum; is that what you meant Philip? I must say Duxford was so big we didn't really see much of two of the Halls, so we are going back again soon.

I can look and take some photos then?

Yep, Wybo Boersma (Airborne Museum) was there last week and told me the nose section was at display, if you want to have a look for me it would be nice, thanks Paul

Ok, I took one shot of the outside by the light in there is poor compared to the rest of the museum. Will see what I can do.

That glass memorial is just about the best I've seen, spent a long time looking at it when we last visited - one etching for each and every plane lost was a fine idea.

Did you stop and watch any of the aircraft restorations/maintenance in progress Paul? That hall's one of Duxford's most interesting areas for me.

Still think one of their finest exhibits is the massive chunk of Tirpitz's Skirt armour.
It'd make a damned fine coffee table.

We were watching this being worked on. It was quite something to see. In the main restoration area I must confess I got high on all the dope fumes, we spent so long in there!

Fascinating isn't it - I like Tank/vehicle restorations, but the result of a mistake is likely to be 'a clunk and the thing stopping'.
These chaps are working to an altogether different standard, where the result of a mistake is quite likely 'a flaming plummet from 1000 feet' - there's something hugely impressive about it all, and the toolkits!

Thanks for the really great pictures Paul. You've whetted my appetite to go back again some time, it has improved so much since my last visit. They even have a Bedford 15cwt wireless truck.

Here is the picture. If the white rectangular above the door is the Mod tag, I'm afraid it's unreadable (even when inspected close-up beyond the barrier, socks only )

My first attempt at a thumnail photograph!!
Cockpit of the Horsa Glider at the Airborne Forces Museum, Duxford ... there is a wealth of information held in the Archives ... well worth spending time in this section.

do you have to pay for visiting the archives? as I would like to find out if they hold any info about the Horsas

When I visited Duxford in early 2009 I rang and made an appointment to visit the Archives: at that time I was not asked to pay and all the staff in this section at Duxford were extremely helpful. Sorry, but I don't know whether circumstances have changed since 2009.

If you are looking for information about the Horsa Glider ......

    Varsity CD 169.jpg

...... the Assault Glider Trust at RAF Shawbury have constructed a Horsa Glider ... full size!! The hanger housing this Horsa can be seen on Public Open Days. It's quite an experience to board this Horsa to view the cockpit and contrtols together with the fuselage.

Other good sources of information ... Steve Wright (member of WW2 Talk): the Glider Pilot Regimental Association: and the Museum of Army Flying in Middle Wallop.

    Good Luck

Are there any good videos series from Duxford similar to the ones from Fletcher and Willey from the Tank Museum?
    Hope so.
