A friend has sent these photographs of his father Edward Arthur Henry (b. 1923) and uncle Frederick William George (b. 1921). Due to illness he's not able to pursue chasing records yet, but I see on Find My Past there are Royal Artillery Attestation Papers for a Frederick William George, two entries 1939 & 1941. Anybody with a FMP account take a peek for me at these two possibilities please? Thank you. Maria
Hodges & Taylor confirm 860 and 862 with 'Army Group' (Bottom left to top right) bar as Tank Transporter Companies RASC, 21st Army Group but don't expand on which. Certainly we seem to be looking at the same sort of Diamond T tractors as on this thread :- RASC Tank Transporter AOS RASC units frequently had thir own signs -We need this book - has anyone ever seen it ? - 21st Army Group RASC Formation Badges - Signwriters Pattern Book c.1945 | #427622813 Any chance of re-scanning and zooming in on the sign on the door ?
His father and uncle, wouldn't they have the SAME surname? So is it Edward Arthur Henry GEORGE and Frederick William GEORGE? To have two families each with surnames that could be Christian first names seems a little unusual, but what do I know?
I assumed a maternal uncle. Could be huge age ranges in his mothers siblings. My great gran had her last child age 46. I see on FMP there's a Private E.A. Henry, RASC 105163, on the 1945 Casualty Lists. Kev has not long started his family tree on Ancestry. I wonder if either 1939 I.D. Reg reveals any military details.

The formation sign on the door of the Tank Transporter looks like 15 Coy RASC (Tk Tptr). See: RASC Coy Formation Signs Furthermore, Hodges & Taylor give (page 110) 15 Tk Tptr Coy as having the AoS Serial 861, as part of GHQ, L of C & Army Troops, First Army from 31 Dec 42 (whereas Serials 858, 859, 862 & 863 were allocated to 9, 20, 16 & 17 Tk Tptr Coys respectively). The photos on the OP must have been shot after 25 Sep 43, when the use of diagonal bars on the AoS Sign were promulgated. If they were shot in NW Europe, and because we know thanks to Dave's post RASC Tank Transporter AOS that 15 Coy (TT) was later part of 21 A Gp, this would mean that it retained its AoS Serial after its transfer from First Army. The 'A4' on the windscreen must mean the 4th vehicle in 'A' Platoon. Michel
