    Michael,

A wonderful job of posting these records from Adegem. I visited this cemetery last spring with Stolpi.

With Nov. 11th approaching I thought you would appreciate the corresponding Canadian commemoration of these men. As I read through the lists and see the many different home towns and cities shown, I am reminded of the cenotaphs in every village, town and city in this country that also remember their lost sons.

BAIN, SCOTTY GARFIELD (age 22). Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. Private (B/136838). North Nova Scotia Highlanders, R.C.I.C. Wounded on October 22, 1944. Died of wounds. Plot 4, Row A, Grave 2.

DURRANT, HAROLD DAVISON (age 27). Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada. Flying Officer (C/24452). Royal Canadian Air Force. Drowned. Body recovered from the sea. HM LST-420 was sunk by a mine in the English Channel, while ferrying R.A.F personnel to Belgium. They were unable to enter the port of Ostend due to heavy weather. On returning to England, just outside the port of Ostend, she struck a mine. After a big explosion the vessel broke in two and sank quickly. It carried military equipement and a great number of Air Crew personal. Fourteen officers and 224 other ranks were lost. Only 31 were saved. It was the greatest loss of life on a British landing craft during World War II. Plot 1, Row D, Grave 7.

MACLAREN, ALEXANDER (age 32). Scotland. Aircraftman 1st Class (1365916). Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Base Signal Repair Unit(?). Plot 12, Row D, Grave 1. Could not find proof, but its very likely that this Aircraftsman was also on HM LST-420 when it hit a mine. Plot 12, Row D, Grave 1.

THORNBOROUGH, LESLIE JOSEPH (age 19). United Kingdom. Wireman (D/JX 570369). Royal Navy, H.M. L.C.T. (R) 457. On November 5, 1944 the vessel hit a mine 13 miles NNW of Oostende, Belgium (North Sea), while in convoy on its way home from an assault mission to the Dutch island of Walcheren, and sank. According to the available information that I've found, I expect that Leslie died of wounds or his body washed ashore on November 11, 1944. No information on his temporary burial. With Stolpi and Canuck and JVD on one occasion and another occasion by myself, I had a chance to visit the Adegem Cemetery to pay my respects. Lt. Col. Lewis who commanded my father's regiment (17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars ) is buried there. Thank you for this thread.
