    Hey VP

Turns out it's an M37. I thought it was a WC but wasn't sure. I always get them confused

I think it's a 1/2 ton ambulance but it might be some radio van variant.

Stretching the thread title a bit but it did go from civilian to Japanese staff car, back to civilian (sort of) and then an ambulance.

Most of the sites that this vehicle appears on say it is a Horsche 853 left behind by the Germans in Czechoslovakia and converted into a firetruck.

    Re Use of Merlins

In my day there was at least one dhow operating out of Dubai with a merlin down below and used on the gold/immigrant run (gold into India - immigrant workers into Arabia). There may have been two but one didn't speak too loudly about such things

Is that last based on a Comet? Cromwell?

Up-thread there is a link to an imgur gallery with postwar drilling vehicles used in the Canadian west (British Columbia). I just stumbled on these vehicles while looking around on wikipedia. The bit I like, though, is this bit from the Morpac Industries website, which shows another(?) M4-based vehicle (although maybe these were not converted vehicles but they produced compatible parts? I'm not sure). They may not be selling new vehicles, but if you wanted, oh, a new set of tracks... you could get still get them!

Has it got return rollers above the road wheels ?
No - not a Comet then.

Has it got teeth showing on the outside of the sproket at the rear ?
No - not a Cromwell either.

    As TTH says it's a T34.

    Surprised you had to ask.

They torched almost the whole center of the rear engine cover away. Must have gotten tired of unbolting the access hatches.
