"People you follow" function - (How) does it work?

Discussion in 'Network Information, Suggestions and Feedback' started by Michel Sabarly, Sep 22, 2018.

  1. I am supposed to be "following" a number of people, but apart from having them listed in my "People you follow" page, nothing's happening: no alerts nor email notifications when they post, for example, which I thought would have been the primary use of such a function.
I thought I might have inadvertently disabled an alert, but in the "Alert preferences" page there is nothing on the "Follow" function...
    Did I miss something?

Haven't a clue how it works & I've tried to get rid of my followers but can't. One of those pointless things that the software designers came up with that I see no use for.

    Akin to a Stalker function

Click your name at the top of the board to bring the drop-down menu. Click 'People you follow' and the list appears with an 'unfollow' option beside each one.

There is a use for following, but it has been turned off. On other versions of the board that same drop down menu I just mentioned has 'Your News Feed' which brings up a chronological list of every action (post, like, reply, status update) taken my members you are following--but it has been deactivated here.

If you want to turn it on, you might find an option on The Admin CP (control panel) > Options > News Feed > Check Box for Enable (and there are other options here to play with).

Of course, I don't know if you have this function installed--it might not be there at all.

I'm not up for following anyone, or anyone following me. If members which to do that, then i don't have a problem with it. Most people can remember which threads they have posted on. Talking of functions, the quote one is rather good.. It reminds you of the thread that you have taken part in.. Along has you have been quoted.

Did you Mods / Admin not chat about this before the software was installed? You may well have been a:sleep:

    Regards,
    Stu.:D

I don't follow anyone. It's the ones who follow me I want to get rid of. That won't work for that.

Don't have all the 'News Feed' stuff in Admin. Looks like it might be a plugin.
I think the follow is more for different types of forums where people might be more likely to open up a page of mates to PM/Chat etc. with about Bronies or Lubricants or Japanese knickers or something. They're all handy on your profile.

 Errr, yeah, discussed in depth... errrm.
It's not like the Software just appears when Otto installs it, I fight for 48 hrs to understand it a little then O & D impose some structure on the front end by coaxing me along.
    That would be weird.

And we can always be arsed to ask for any plugins. Owen never immediately says no to such little changes.
    He's so positive.

    Probably.

  14. Do I understand correctly then that the Follow function in its present state does nothing at all?
