Hi I am trying to find my great grandfather no one knows much about him as he died when my grandad was young. All I know is that he served during ww2 possibly engineers buy don't count me on that. His name was Alfred Joseph Hudson born in orsett, essex 1914-1958 ??? Married Elizabeth K M Ashwell in 1937, she was born 1916-2002. His children were Alfred, Minnie and bettie. His parents I believe were Thomas Hodgson Hudson and ad a anne Hyde. I believe Thomas Hodgson was his original name and change it to Hodgson Hudson. Any help would be great thanks...

A look through this forum will produce a large number of requests for information on service personnel and the main piece of advice we can give is to obtain a copy of the individual’s service records from the MOD.

Unless you are unlucky, service records will give a timeline showing units, promotions (and demotions!), embarkation/disembarkation dates, award entitlements, hospitalisations (although not medical records) etc etc.. This will enable further research via the relevant unit’s war diaries or other sources of information thereby building a complete and accurate picture of their service.

The process for obtaining records can be found here: Service records

Also worth using this forum’s search facility, once you are sure when and where they served.

    Good luck.

Thank you but surely i don't know enough information to fill out that paperwork for service records ?? I did a similar post on a ww1 forum a couple off years ago for another family member and lots off people chipped in and found my great great grandfather. I thought I'd try the same thing on here as I currently don't have the extra funds to pay for the research at this moment. Thanks Dan

If Alfred lived at 10 Peaceful Row, Thurrock his dob is stated as 20 Nov 1914 and his occupation 'Factory shunter'.

Edit: if you wonder why his official birth record shows 1915 that is because they show the date of registration and NOT actual birth.

Dan its been a good start for you and people have and will chip in,however if you do track him down and he did serve in WW2 you will have to spend the 30 pounds to get his service records. You will not find them anywhere else except via the official route.

How did you find this that he was a factory shunter?? I was told he served in the war but again information along the lines can be wrong. If I do find him and he was military I will happily get his service records. Thanks again

The information is from the 1939 Register, those who served in the war still had occupations but it indicates he signed up after then. Elizabeth's dob is given as 6 Aug 1916.

Alot of individual military records for the WW1 era are available online so it is often “easy” to trace an individual. However WW2 era records are not as available. The best starting point is to obtain a copy of a service record as from that you will be able to then look for War Diaries etc. Without a service record you will be very lucky to trace your relatives military movements.

You might have more success if you added great granddad's name to the post title.
Other relatives who may know more might then catch the name and step in to help.
Do you have any memorabilia of his, medals, letters, photos?
You've got the family history side, but he more you can provide the more we can help.
Have other family members been asked for what they may know, to help you?
If he divorced in 1951, that may account for the lack of information.....

    Presumably you're the Terraplane man?
