Hi Geoff. I'm pretty sure that they are matches - I found the site last year and tried sending an email to Peter Tohiariki's family via the link on his page but never received a response.

This site is not anywhere like a complete record. I have a list of 15 NZ POW repatriated with my Dad and only 4 are on the AWMM.

There were a couple of other Australian/New Zealand addresses listed in the diary. I did manage to make contact with the family of Bob Maddren who were nice enough to send me some extracts from an unpublished memoir he'd written.

Thanks for that. Interesting that he worked down a Salt mine as my great granddad did the same at Stalag IXC. He had pictures of the camp at Thorne in his logbook but the Red Cross records I received this week does not list it as a camp he was in. The info I have on Mr Stokes shows he was in Stalag IXC as well. If I remember correctly I found his details in one if the published lists of POWs that were compiled at various points during the war.

WOW WOW WOOOOOOOW erm ok I’m excited can I just say what I have just found looking through this file is amazing. I have been searching for uncle Stanley for years thinking Stanley sure that can not be a name ? I’ve found him at the address of 64 Luann road Cudworth he is called Stuart :0 that’s amazing I really do thank the guy for uploading this and of course the guy who wrote the original. Does this mean that guy wrote this would have been with Stanley ?

Hey, I am really pleased that after transcribing all the names and addresses (with some great help from other members) that we’ve found another match. It should be Stanley not Stuart as you’ve pointed out - I must’ve entered the name wrong!

I think it was a bit like when kids leave school and sign each other’s yearbooks. It seems that guys who were POW together would exchange addresses presumably to keep in touch after the war. Have you looked through the photos yet to see if he appears in any?

I’d seen the photo before but hadn’t realised it originated from the IWM archive. Caption gives a little bit more information.

“Newly-repatriated New Zealand Prisoner of War Don Croft shows fellow repatriates P Tohiariki and M A Cameron a dress dagger, which he 'acquired' as a souvenir from the German Camp Commandant after liberation. The men are standing in the lounge of the Norfolk Hotel in Margate, Kent.”
