  1. Hi I have bought a pair of field glasses and I was hoping someone may be able to tell me more about them and an approximate value. I don't intend to sell them but am intrigued to know how much they are worth and if I was ripped off or not. I'll post a photo as soon as I workl out how to do so!!

  2. Apologies for the picture I took it at the auction and haven't got any other ones as I am at work. They come as you see them no leather case unfortunately. If anyone can help shed light on whether they are military issue etc I would really appreciate it.

They could be WW1, but are in a very sorry state, and look to be missing parts, need to see if there is a WD mark on them - IMO I would have thought there are much better value binoculars on the market - however its your choice (and money)

  4. Thanks TD, excuse my ignorance but where would I find the WD mark? I didn't pay much for these so I can't complain only £5.50 at my local auction. I was thinking they may be WWI or even earlier just based on the style. Would it be a good idea to attack them with Brasso or is it best to leave them as they are with the patina?

    At £5.50 you certainly can't complain !

I'd certainly look for an equally cheap case to hold them and confine cleaning to wiping with a dry cloth.

  6. Thanks Ron, I am of the opinion they are better pretty much left as they are as cleaning would take the history away from them. I am curious to learn a bit more about them and will study them for any marks when I get home from work.

I am the warden based at Castle Archdale Country Park in Co. Fermanagh N. Ireland. It was a former RAF flying boat base (Catalinas & Sunderlands), if there are any RAF service personnel out there who have any memories of the base here I would appreciate it if you would take the time to contact me via a private message.

The most important part is the optics, if they are still good then OK, but if they are scratched, cracked etc etc then I would suggest you leave them alone.

I would suggest also you them alone re cleaning, you will remove the patina

The mark for the War Dept supplied items is here - wd arrow stamp - Google Search it should (if they are WD supplied) have this mark somewhere on them.

Re binoculars - good pairs will be expensive, and often Naval ones are better for longer distances, these often being made by Barr & Stroud.

Doing a search on this site comes up with - http://ww2talk.com/index.php?search/905110/&q=barr+&+Stroud&o=relevance

They look very similar to a pair which I inherited from my Grandfather, when I was a child (unfortunately they're long gone now though). I remember that they were marked Army & Navy.

  10. Wow thanks Bin There they do look similar to me too. I'm still not home to look at the binos but will do later. Great find for £5.50 even though the optics aren't great and their generally a bit grubby!

  11. Weird that eBay listing is from Southern Ireland and I've sourced a very similar pair in Northern Ireland!

No problem. I'm no expert on binos; just happened to stumble across the listing after reading your post. I know the conditions are different between your binos and those in the eBay listing, but I think if the person who sold you your set had checked eBay first, you might have been charged a tad more . . . :)
