When did, in most regiments, did the crown on its own become the CSM/BSM badge leaving the crown and k
    laurel leaves for the RQMS??

Possibly when they decided they didn't need the WO III (Platoon/Troop Sergeant Major) rank anymore?

    .
According to other threads, that was in 1940 but I don't think the change happened that early.

I believe the change was post-war despite the WOIII being dropped earlier in the war.

Platoon Sergeant Major was definitely still around in 1945, after that not sure when it changed.

Other threads on here have that PSM with a badge and title went in 1948 but is it safe to assume (never assume - check!) that CSM/BSM became crown only at the same time and RQMS crown and wreath - haven't yet seen a definitive answer but thanks for your interest anyway.
