    Hi,

    20 Mar 2003

Second Gulf War - Although the first bombs were dropped on 20 March 2003, the air campaign began in earnest the following day.

Precision attacks by aircraft and cruise missiles were made against several hundred military targets.

As the land battle developed, an increasing number of close air support (CAS) sorties were flown. Tornado GR4s and Harrier GR7s flew 1,353 offensive strike sorties and released 919 weapons, the great majority precision-guided weapons including the first use of the Storm Shadow stand-off missile released by Tornados.

All the RAF's main operational air assets were heavily engaged in the operation together with six RAF Regiment squadrons and personnel drawn from fifteen specialist RAF ground support units.
