Lt. Constantin (Conny) Vogel was found dead by locals of Dieterskirch near Uttenweiler and had a decent burriel close by.
Internet helped me to find his family in the US and they followed my invitation to visit the place, meet eye witnesses and many villagers, the local authorities and the press inMay this year.
If there is interest I will post the article anf further details.

Lt Vogel is not recorded in the ABMC database which suggests that his remains were repatriated home.

On 18 March 1944,the USAAF put up 214 Mustangs which would be on primary duty escort duties.

    8th Air Force....Nos 4,355 and 357 Fighter Groups.

    9th Air Force....Nos 354 and 363 Fighter Groups

Total number of fighters dispatched was 925 and about this time, fighter long range escort capability to targets had been established by the fitting of drop tanks.

    2/Lt. Konstantin J. Vogel,MACR 3109.
Escort mission to Augsburg,Germany. Shortly after landfall Lt.Vogel attached himself to a flight of the 358th FS of the 355th FG.
Apparently Lt.Vogel had lost his radio and no communication was possible. He remaimed with the 355th FG until the Augsburg-
Gunzburg area on the return flight. The flight was suddenly attacked by two Fw-190s and the leader called ''Break'' but Vogel did not hear the warning. Aircraft was last seen with its left wing burning and Lt.Vogel preparing to bale out. Lt. Vogel was buried in the cemetery at Dieterskirch in the Ehingen-Donau area. 1 KIA

Thanks Jaap for posting a most interesting background to the loss of 2nd Lt Vogel and his aircraft

Looking at the loss report for 2nd Lt Vogel as the report states he was serving with the 8th Air Force 357 Fighter Group 362 Squadron. He was lost on a mission out of his airfield at Leiston located on the Suffolk coast

Initially the Fighter Group was within the 9th Air Force based at Raydon but moved to Leiston (Army Air Force Station F 373) as the first assigned much needed P 51 Mustang Fighter Group for the 8th Air Force.First mission was on11 February 1944,the last being 25 April 1945.The Group returned a distinguished record of being the second highest kills of enemy aircraft in the air by a 8th Air Force Fighter Group

Aircraft. P51 B,,,,,,, type first issued to 9th Air Force for Europe operations in November 1943.

Engine type. V1650-3...... was a US Packard built Rolls Royce Merlin.
