It's maybe harsh-seeming on starting out. A rather official-seeming process, but what Owen & others have said is true, Jack. Any website waving easy access to a British WW2 serviceman's individual Service record isn't helping anyone. The MoD is currently the only place to lay your hands on it, if it isn't already in family hands. It costs a few quid & there is no absolute guarantee you'll get much info. Some are hefty, some a single page. Nothing else starts you on the correct trail in the same way, though. Once you've got it, thick or thin, some of the chaps here are remarkable at wheedling out little details from some clerk's scrawl. That's when you start really working stuff out, but that record is the best thing to start with.
