Hi there, I don't know what is purpose of town major please? In several order of the battle, I have found several formation or unit named town major class-A, B and C. Do you know what is the purpose of town major please? Cheers Shams
A Great War description, but I imagine the duties remained very similar. What was a Town Major? – The Long, Long Trail Definition of TOWN MAJOR
Hi Town Majors was the term given to the Military Officer given the responsibility for looking after the civilian population of a town or village. They were also the representative of the military power that was running their county after the axis powers left. It wasn't necessarily a job for Major's either. I have read documents that suggest that a Lt. looked after the Greek Island of Salamis as Town Major after the Germans left. I have read they were part peacekeeper, part magistrate, part Councillor, part Mayor. A real jack of all trades. Gus
Pure guess as to it being the size of their staff, so the size of the locality they covered? If Aixman is looking, is there anything in WEs on them? I seem to recall seeing them mentioned somewhere but they aren't really in my sphere of interest, Volume IV perhaps? Gary
I recall reading in War Diaries of 9th Royal Sussex Rgt that an officer had been posted to be a Town Major, in Malaya late in 1945.It seems something that was done in between a state of war and a proper return to peace and the gradual handover to civil powers.
In Italy, once the Fascist officials in a locality had been removed by the Allies during their advance, there was effectively no government. As the Allies troops pushed on, a Town Major was appointed by AMGOT to run the locality - water, power, judiciary, transport. Frank AMGOT - Allied Military Government
Thanks. By the way, do you about the war establishment of town majors class-A, B and C please? Regards Shams
