That's well observed! Not sure if it was worth noting? You may be some what of a pedant? Can you please point out what you have spotted? Not funny when people have gone out of there way to help out Iain. Rich has provided the relevant diary pages. Cheers. Edit, I'm sure Iain will make use of the above diary pages that Rich has posted when he sees them. Regards Stu.
What a shame things have taken this turn. It's been my experience that most folks who reply on the forum do so in order to help others. Corrections, esp of place names, should be welcomed. I don't see the problem in pointing out such errors...but then I've also been accused of being something a pedant myself.
Oh Damn ! Come back Nik. The 1940 sub-forum needs you ! Bearing in mind how inaccurate place-name spellings are in many BEF diaires and published accounts, it is most helpful if someone who knows the ground can expand on them.
Lots of us are pedants . I saw nothing wrong with LondonNik pointing out a placename was spelt incorrectly.
dbf & Owen, I take both of your points of view & I agree. Suggesting someone may be pedant, was somewhat strong! I hold my hand up & apologies to LondonNik. But really, is there any need for someone to delete there posts? We are not children in the playground. Perhaps it would of been wise for LondonNik to point out where the spelling mistake was ( i did ask in a polite way).. I'm sure it was not much to ask? We are in a sorry state if that is the case? Its been my experience that one has helped others on the forum where i can. Lets leave it that. Regards Stu.
A qualified apology. (Left feeling awkward about ever starting this thread. Those who follow on - please negotiate the diversion and continue on as originally intended. )
Lets all jog on. I'm more than pleased that one has received ' A qualified apology'. I did ask if we could leave it at that. Iain seems to be happy. See his post 20. Or have you Mods misted that? So lets be fare & please negotiate the diversion & continue on as originally intended. Mods are not always correct. Regards Stu.
( To state the obvious: they may not always be but even a mod has the same right to comment, and on a thread they've started. )
Did I mention there's a regimental history come up for grabs for a meagre fee of £180, yes, 180 of your English pounds ! The History of the Northamptonshire Regiment 1934-1948 - The Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association
I did bother to check The Fifth British Division.1939 to 1945. It looks as if the British had two ways of spelling Nerville / Neuville St. Vaast. I'm guessing it was a miss type in the pages of the History of the 2nd Battalion ( that one has provided). I also bothered to check the Regimental Histories of the Inniskilling's & the Wiltshire's. How come you have not got on London Nicks case for throwing his dummy out? Has a mod who is being one sided, then I will leave it with you... I normally pay respect to anybody who is a mod, but you are coming across as a spoilt teacher. Less of the funny faces. Lets remember, I did ask Nik to come up with the goods. He was some what vague. I'm probably wasting my time. A simple piece of evidence was not much to ask. Regards Stu. Edit..Andy, one is not a fool has to pay so much for a book. I could possibly obtain it for free if one wanted. Thank-you for the heads up.
I'm more than willing to pay half of the amount ! ( That's 90 sheets of your English coin ). I would have thought that you all-ready had this book in your collection? I don't ! I did mention that. From time to time, I do ask a library if they do have a copy of any book that I cant find, or afford.
Interesting. My uncle James, listed in the list of the casualties on this thread, is buried in Wormhoudt cemetery 90km from the battleground of Maroeuil. Date of death on his headstone 23rd May 1940. Was he wounded in the battle and taken towards Dunkirk and died later? If so why the 23rd given as his passing date. No way would they have carried a dead body that far surely?
The answer may be in the Regimental Missing Men file at Kew covering this specific campaign. I can tell you there was a RAMC medical facility (Casualty Clearing Station I think) at Wormhoudt before the 28th May when the massacre took place.
Thanks Drew, so are you saying that you think he died before, after or on the date of his headstone? I realise it’s just guess work. Did he die in Wormhoudt or Manoevil? I would imagine he would have been buried at Thievpal had he died at Manoevil. Wormhoudt is a decent schlep away.
