Amassed quite a few memorial photos over the Summer holidays which I've finally got around to uploading to Flickr.

First off some Northern Irish memorials - my wife is from there so I am over quite a lot to see my in-laws...

Londonderry War memorials. Sadly the main one in the centre of the city shows signs of vandalism reflecting the impact of the The Troubles https://flic.kr/s/aHsm9ZUvYU

Bushmills War Memorials - the main one is hard to photograph as it is situated in the middle of a busy roundabout. There is also a fantastic statue of Robert Quigg V.C. which was erected more recently. There was also a rather nice WW2 exhibition on the weekend we visited. https://flic.kr/s/aHsm7Npbm5

    Coleraine War Memorial https://flic.kr/s/aHsm9ZU6fL

    Ballymena War Memorial https://flic.kr/s/aHskqqKoG3

I was also south of the Border this month and spotted this one in the City of Cork https://flic.kr/s/aHsm54bgNA

    Scottish memorials

    Leslie War memorial https://flic.kr/s/aHsm6xchf8

Kinfauns War memorial. I was doing some family history research during the summer and grabbed a couple of snaps of this memorial while visiting the grave of my paternal great grandfather. There's also a memorial to one of the victims of the Titanic distaster in the churchyard https://flic.kr/s/aHsm7NnWSd

Dunblane War Memorials - took a bit of searching to locate this one but finally found it while out for my morning run. A visit to to the spectacular Cathedral also took me to a little side room where the local roll of honour was displayed. https://flic.kr/s/aHsm54bo2s

Glasgow Kelvingrove War Memorials - Situated in the grounds of the fabulous Kelvingrove Gallery, this is a fantastic life-like sculpture of men going "over the top". https://flic.kr/s/aHsm54bo2s

    Hi, Incredibledisc,

I run a website of war memorials (www.irishwarmemorials.ie) on the island of Ireland, and I would very much like to include your images of the memorials in Bushmills, Coleraine and Ballymena, if you will agree. I usually include the name of the photographer as a contributor to the project, but you may remain anonymous if you wish.

There is an important point – all photos on the website are designated as free of copyright, to be attributed to the project if reproduced, so if you are not happy with that, I won’t use your photos.

The project is compiling a record of memorials in the Republic and Northern Ireland to all conflicts (it goes back to 1690), with photos and transcripts of the inscriptions. The main aim is to allow people anywhere in the world to see a relative’s name on a memorial. For this reason, there is a searchable database of the names, as well as databases of places, wars and regiments/services. Memorials to events in Ireland since 1969 are not included on the website.

With Nov. 11th coming tomorrow, I looked back at the cenotaph (built in 1922) from my home town. Throughout grade school, K-6, we marched en masse to the annual service here as did many other schools. It seemed such a long way but is actually only a 850m walk. My most vivid memory is seeing the WW1 and WW2 vets standing ramrod straight and seemingly oblivious to whatever harsh weather was faced.
God help any of the students who didn't do the same. The appropriate level of respect was to stand motionless and silent for the full hour.
