    Hi everyone

I'm trying to research some information regarding my Grandfather.

    Corporal Emerson Carson McCarron
    DOB 7.6.14
    No 407323

He enlisted at Omagh , Co Tyrone on 14.11.33 to The Cavalry of the Line, Royal Inniskilling Dragoons.

    Home 14.11.33 - 2.10.34
    China. 3.10.34 - 22.1.36

On 31.5.34 he transferred to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers as a Corporal.

    Malaya 23.1.36 - 25.10.38
India 26.10.38 - 6.11.43 ( it was during this time that he was posted in Burma with the Chindits 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers )
Home 7.11.43 - 3.12.48 (I assume that this was due to poor health having contracted malaria )
He was eventually discharged on 3.12.50 from 5th Inniskilling Fusiliers.

He then enlisted to the Territorial Army on 4.12.50 No.22534236 in Omagh as a Corporal. He was finally discharged from the TA on 30.12.63.

I would be ever so grateful if I could get more specific detail regarding his service particularly in relation to his time in Burma. Unfortunately he passed away just prior to my 4th birthday 3.9.1980. He never really spoke about his experiences apart from when he was in Omagh Legion and he met up with others who'd served alongside him . Any information or pictures would be particularly great.

Many thanks again for your help in this matter.

If you can, it might be worth editting 'Chindit' into the thread title. The dates suggest Op Longcloth and we have an active member here whose thing that is.

    Hi Denise,

I've not come across any Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers soldiers that became Chindits in 1943 or before. However, during some of my sideways research over the years, I do have mention of Emerson. This comes in the form of a part listing of soldiers that fought with the 1st Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the 1st Burma Campaign in 1942-43 in the Arakan region of Burma. This list was found in the file WO361/202, held at the British National Archives in London.

Being part of this list would suggest that your grandfather took part in the first Arakan Campaign and was fortunate to survive some fierce fighting in what was very difficult terrain. Arakan Campaign 1942–43 - Wikipedia

Here is the listing page with his name on it:

Thanks very much for getting back to me so quickly. I really appreciate the links attached re- Op Longcloth , 14th Indian Infantry Division as well as the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers listing of soldiers.

If by any chance you come across anything else I would be really grateful if you could let me know.

    Thanks Denise.
