Bomber Command Fighter Affiliation exercises took their toll of RAF casualties as was the fatal collision between the Wellingon and Spitfire of the Central Gunnery School,RAF Leconfield.

These air excercises were quite common on wartime operational airfields with the ever danger of collison while in the act of evading fighter attack approaches.

The Air Ministry disclosed last night that an A.T.C. cadet aged 15, of Nelson Lancashire, was in a Wellington that crashed into the sea off Brest on Friday, and has been posted as missing, together with Sergeant D.E.Smith of the R.A.F, and an unnamed Indian Pilot Officer as his family has not been informed.

    Hi Peter,

Full entries would be most welcome as long as it is not too much trouble. I have logged an investigative spreadsheet for these losses and intend to try and trace all of these lads christian names and NOK to make them complete.

Trying to track the genealogy of these lads to fill in a few gaps however being listed on Runnymede, no death certificates are available on the internet.

Assists when looking to confirm age etc.

Possibly some newspaper entries are available on these lads?

    Cheers

    Geoff

    Details of the above loss.

    24 May 1942

    1483 Flight
    Wellington IC T2802
    Op.Training

Took off from Newmarket for fighter affiliation training using cine camera gun, the crew comprising of pilot, wireless operator (attached from 138 Squadron), wireless operator air gunner, an air gunner, three ground staff, an Air Training Corps cadet and an army artillery expert who was attached to 109 Squadron. At around 1600, the Wellington's main spar assembly failed outboard of the starboard engine. With a large portion of its wing missing, the bomber spun in near Stanton some 6 miles NE of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Three were buried in Newmarket Cemetery, while Capt White was taken to Brookwood Military Cemetery. The others were claimed by their next of kin. F/S Adderly had flown a tour of operations with 115 Squadron; his DFM had been published on 2 September 1941. It is also noted that F/S Boyle's third Christian name was Ypres.

Deacs Well i am from Cumbria.

Buried in Dalston Road Cemetery, Carlisle.Cumbria is Angus James Steele died 10th Jan.1944. On the headstone that you will see is the engraving of the badge of the Air Training Corps. I have not been able to find him in CWGC and Ancestry doesn't give any clues to if he was in the ATC. Any help would be appreciated cheers.

This looks like a private headstone - that is it was erected by the family and not the CWGC. Most CWGC headstones are of a similar style, I have never seen one in black stone. Also, the crest is smaller than typical of a war grave.

To my mind this suggests Angus died not on duty, or in the ATC or as the result of hostilities. Hence he did not qualify for a war grave. Looks like the family put the ATC crest there through personal choice.

Something else that has come to mind - at the age of 19 in 1944 he should have been conscripted into regular service. It might be possible he was medical unfit to serve.
Guessing further a serious illness may have led to him dying so young.

    Hello Eion and welcome
Many CWGC listed casualties have private headstones in this country.
As suggested he did not qualify for CWGC status and the family have placed the ATC crest as a sign of respect for their son.
One way to check further is for a copy of his death certificate.

Example of a different stone used by CWGC
