This is a new collection just added to Ancestry today. Records should detail Name, DOB, Age, Place of Birth, Date of Service and names of Mother, Father or Spouse.
Thanks amberdog - just checked that - started 25th July About UK, Royal Air Force Airmen Records, 1918-1940 This collection comprises records of Airmen serving in the Royal Air Force during the years 1918 up to, and including, 1940. The Royal Air Force (RAF) was founded in 1918, after the uniting of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). The records are arranged by service number and include the following details, where available: Name Date of Birth Age Place of Birth Date of Service Service Number Name of Mother Name of Father Name of Spouse Bast**rds - in order to open the actual file you need to be a member of Fold3 although it does give access to a basic record TD
The same series is on FindMyPast but with image view included in the subscription. Word of caution the original series in AIR79 is only valid for a subset of airmen. Records for those subsequently commissioned are not part of the series and it is also incomplete from 1932 onwards. The full detail is under AIR 79 in discovery Air Ministry: Air Member for Personnel and predecessors: Airmen's Records | The National Archives "The records of those airmen whose service continued into the 1930s and 1940s (where a record of service survives) will be transferred at a later date." A quick search on service number will show that most airmen in the 5XXXXX series are missing so despite the heading on Ancestry and FindMyPast NOT to 1940 eg I tried a few known casualties from 1937 (I know the full details - just seeing if they are in this record set) A.C.2 Hudson 521201 killed at Farnborough Empire Air Day display 29/51937 but nowt. also nowt on 24/08/1937 521867 LAC Thomas John McGill (Age 27) Died in a drowning accident at Wansford, Cambridgeshire (presumably in the River Nene?) Burial location NK. Originated from Belfast N.I. Serving with No 11 FTS RAF Wittering - Trade NK Ross
