Dear WW2 Forumers, This is my new model of a set of scratch built railway ambulance coaches dating from the Boer War, the set was later used in WW1 and WW2, and for this model I am building for WW1 as I quite like the colour scheme. The next set will be for WW2. The latest efforts on the Netley ambulance coaches are building and stocking up on the interior fittings, the toilets and cupboards are built, seats, beds and blankets made, some figures are being prepared. A question - the colour of sheets and blankets in 1914? In my navy days in the 70's I have a recollection that the navy issue kit was blue/white patterned blankets and white sheets. I am favouring for 1914-1918 war grey-white sheets with thin blue stripes, grey-blue blankets with red stripes. Please let me known what you think, and ... A Very Happy Year to everybody on the forum.
Very nice!! You might find the book Hospital Ships and Ambulance trains by J H Plumridge of use. All of his research material for this book is now held by the Wellcome Foundation Wellcome Library | Colonel Plumridge's own photographs of the "Netley coaches" and No. 39 Ambulance Train on which he served in the First World War, including photographs of "The Queries" concert party but may be viewed at the RAMC Museum at Keogh Barracks John
John, Thanks for the link, the book was one of my first sources of info, here is the latest photos of progress.
Big push on now for the annual model railway competition at Guildex in September, this is for the O Gauge Guild honours of a glass trophy, the first coach is now completed. The roof was always going to be a problem and I tried several methods to build it, finally settled on a sheet of 0.5 mm alluminium which is very easy to form into the correct profile, interior lights have been fitted, and the interconnecting gangways are fully operational. The next 4 coaches will be completed but without the interior detail for the competition. Thanks for all of your kind comments,
David, Great work and hope you win a prize. I too used to model in "0" Gauge and was once a member of the "0" Gauge Guild. I modelled GWR and once entered a Model of Bibury court at Telford, winning a second prize. A long time ago and before I started on large scale Military modelling.☺ Regards Tom
And the Winner is ...... ..... the fantastic restaurant car in the second picture. It is a great model and worthy of the first prize. The Netley coaches were well liked by a lot of people and that is satisfaction enough for me. Thank you Tom and Jack for your encouragement. There is an intention to hold a 100th Anniversary Celebration of the End of the Great War for the Guildex 2018. Please let me know if you would be interested in exhibiting your models, Thanks again for your interest and appreciations, David.
If it was my choice then the Netley coaches would have won by the fact there is more of them. But thats my opinion - well done David lovely models. Maybe we need a WW2 forum model competition?? TD
Clive and TD, Than you for your kind comments and encouragement. I am hoping to have a complete train climbing out of my model of Folkestone harbour very soon. That would really be the ultimate satisfaction. David.
