My dad: L/Cpl Hart, Herbert (Hubert) Raymond - Regt. No. 5783763, spent some time on a 'Medium Grade Cipher' course in 1944 whilst attached to the above group. He then went on to the 'No. 88 High Grade Cipher' course which is when he got his stripe. This was on 26th October 1944 in Cairo, or possibly Alexandria/Kabrit.

His record shows that he was with: R. Sigs. BD and School - MEF, 1945, and demobbed in early 1947. Can anyone confirm locations and/or name others in same place, same time.

    Thank you

I've just started researching my grandfathers war history. He also completed cipher courses in 1944/1945 in Alexandria and served with the Signals Raiding Squadron. Do you have any info on that unit? I don't understand the National Archives reference.

It is a war diary for that unit that covers the time period stated. If you cannot get to The National Archives at Kew then perhaps check out the section in blue on Drew's post above, hes very good and a lot cheaper than using the in-house service.

Drop me a Private Message if you'd like a copy of the file James. I'll be at the National Archives next month when I'll be able to copy it for you.
