Can anyone please help by answering some questions about how I would find info about German pows. I have some documents from the war, letters. He was in a Pow camp in Sherburn-in-Elmet, North Yorkshire. Married a local girl in 1957.
Please see the link for info about obtaining ICRC records: Requests for information about people held during the Spanish Civil War or the Second World War: Quarterly limit reached "Regarding a request for information about someone held as a prisoner of war ... during the ... Second World War. The maximum number of requests that our staff can deal with has been reached. Service will resume on 1st October 2017. We may still be able to deal with requests of a humanitarian nature before then if: you are the person concerned; your request is linked to administrative formalities or a compensation claim; you are seeking to determine the identity of a natural parent or grandparent." I have obviously done all the google searches and the usual stuff.. I thought this forum would have experts on it who would be able to give me some answers I can't find with a google.
Then it might help if you made it obvious what you already have discovered....eg if you have already applied to WASt or ICRC. Link to your other thread so that members can avoid duplication of information Pow camp in sherburn-in-elmet??
Is this your POW? George Ebisch 1909–1988 BIRTH 11 SEP 1909 DEATH 1988 • Doncaster, Yorkshire, England TD edited to add It would be good to have some documentary evidence of where he was detained as a POW, the camp may have been called something else at the time
No that is not him. He was at 3 camps I think. Knutsford Loughborough, Brayton and then Sherburn in Elmet may not have been a camp perhaps?
OK Before Dec 1944 is could not have been a POW camp: Reference: AIR 29/518 Description: Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment, Sherburn-in-Elmet (AFEE UK); appendices with diagrams and photographs of equipment. Note: appendices only Date: 1944 May-Dec. Held by: The National Archives, Kew Former reference in its original department: IIM/FN3/1A Legal status: Public Record(s) Closure status: Open Document, Open Description There are other similar files but this is the latest. We also know it became an EVW Camp (European Voluntary Workers) never heard of this term before but we are all learning. We also know about POW Camp no 183 183 Quorn Camp, Wood Lane, Quorn, (Quorndon) Leicestershire Eng STANDARD type. See Camp no.9 From - Every prisoner of war camp in the UK mapped and listed Although having said another database gives a different location for camp 183: 183 Beckton Marshes camp, East Ham, London E6, London, England London England 5 Google Fusion Tables However this document (POW camps in the UK) shows the problem especially if you try the 'Find' option and type in 183. Using that same system if you put in Sherburn, then there are zero results. My guess here would be that he was in one of the Camps 183, and after the war was moved to the EVW Hostel at Sherburn, This would have been the old RAF and Airborne training base no longer required and with empty buildings etc would have been a good place to have a Hostel. TD edited to add: If we had his name then there is a chance that there is a family tree on Ancestry that may have information to help answer your questions
The name is Horst ewald He was with another prisoner of war who was an Italian called John mauritzzi.
