    Hi Laurence, Hi Chuck,
Sorry i didn't see this post before.
    Yes i can help.
Ginger Roberts was wounded in a field near Dozulé, taken to German hospital were he died.
Another member of that stick, Pte Sheldon, died in the same field but it seems his body was never recovered as he is still MIA.

Yes sadly Cpl Charlie Sheldon was KIA on the same day that George was wounded. Charlie is commemorated on the CWGC Wall Memorial at Bayeux.

I am trying to see if I can find out anymore information about the German hospital he was taken to, or if I can track down any links with this such as which unit etc. Do you know anymore about this?

    Thanks in advance.

Many wounded Allied POWs were sent to the Rennes Military Hospital. Sirjahn has a list of UK wounded POWs at the hospital in this thread:

Looking for Info on Front-Stalag 221 Rennes France

I don't see Roberts there unless I missed it. He may have been treated locally or sent to a hospital further east?

We still haven't established what German unit was in Dozule. In one witness account it claims many of the German soldiers in the area had been sent to the coast suggesting it was a 711th Infantry Division unit. This orbat for the Division with a listing of Command Posts doesn't mention Dozule, although in many cases all you get is the name of a chateau.

Order of battle of the 711th Infantry Division

The medical unit of the 711th is simply named Sanitäts-Kompanie 711 or Sanitäts-Abteilung 711. Another possibility is Dozule was an outlying unit of the 21st Panzer Division?

    Hi Chuck, Hi Law,
Ginger Robert was treated at Dozulé where he died and was initialy buried.
4 men of the stick CN142 were together: Sgt Bob Locke, Cpl SHELDON, Pte Roberts, Pte Mc Inerney
On 10th June as they were crossing a field near Dozulé, they were caught by machine gun fire. Cpl SHELDON was killed by a direct bullet in the head and Pte Roberts was hit in the left arm and led.
Sgt Locke went to the German hospital with Pte Roberts where they were separated.
Ginger ROBERTS died the following day.
Another 6th Airborne man was intiialy buried at Dozulé next to Pt Roberts: Pte D. DELAHUNT, HQ 3rd Para Brigade, passenger in CN273.
It is possible that Pte DELAHUNT was wounded at Douville En Auge on 7th June where 9 casualties were accounted for , and probably transfered to the Dozulé German hospital where he probably died of his wounds.
It is not known where Cpl Sheldon was buried

    That's terrific Ludo,

My initial map reference for the school was way off. Here's a better one for Lawrence as seen from the Grand Rue. It comes up quite well on Street View.

Thanks for all this info chaps.

Interesting, George was buried further away from the hospital than I would have thought he would have been. But still not very far off at all.

A very odd question and semi-linked as I was going to obviously tie in what happened to the rest of the Stick - who apart from Cpl Sheldon who was KIA on the day George was WIA - in that they were captured and sent to various Stalags. Does anybody know of a map of all the Stalags? Does this exist? A German military map showing all these locations?

    Thanks in advance.

If any of them ended up in X1B fallingbostel then my ex S/Sgt is the curator of the military museum there.

Cheers chaps. I will take a look and come back to you. Not sure about X1B, doesn't ring a bell. Majority from memory were Stalag 1VD + 1VB.

    Hi Alex,

I forgot to reply to this. Just re-reading all this and making notes now in case I missed anything. Do you have or would you be able to possibly contact Frank to see if he would be happy to chat?

    Thanks as always!

    Hi Ben,

The map is a great help in pinning down many of the locations in the witness accounts. The Germans were obviously well established in Dozule by 1944. I noticed on aerials from the period that the town was completely surrounded by apple orchards.

Ben would you know if this is the location of the Postel family farm where many British and Canadian Paras were gathered before their capture on June 10th? It's just down from the briqueterie by a cemetery on the road that runs south from Dozule near the Mairie. In witness accounts it is said to have been on the Chemin du Bois near the edge of the woods.

    Thanks Ben,

It's good to have that confirmed as they were a very brave family as were many others in the village who tried to help the stranded Paras. The chemin du bois at that time went right up the ridge and into the Bois, whereas it stops today at the briqueterie.
