Just a few pics of my Churchill project. The model is all steel with the turret sides being 6mm thick.
Hi swiper,i have'nt decided on the motors as yet but more than likely it will be two mobility scooter motors or similar.Even in it's bare state, the turret weighs over twenty kilos,so the motors will need to be powerful.I'm just working on the hatches and the fixtures and fittings at the moment which again will all be steel, along with the gun. Then there is the mechanisms for the gun elevation and firing. Also, realistic type welds have yet to be applied which will be made from steel putty mixed with fine steel shavings. It's a bit of a job to be honest but i'm enjoying every minute of it and i will keep posting updates as the project progresses. I will be starting the hull soon which i'm looking forward too.....it's over five feet long and again will all be steel......it's great using a welder instead of a tube of glue. All the best, neil.
Oooooooo - enter it in Robot Wars with real AP ammo and see what that does to the opposition Looking good TD edited to add: Hope you are not in trouble over the garden table repaint
Lol....it's an old table....l'm in the middle of doing the garden as well.....so while it's looking like a building site i can get away with things.
A couple more photos.Just put the hatches in......they were a labour of love.....could'nt get them right for ages. Just the gun, periscopes, aerials, welds and fittings to do now and that will be the turret nearly finished.....oh and the hinges on the storage box.
Any idea which unit you'll mark it up as yet? Quite a few ended up getting ARV cupolas in 34 Tank Brigade before Normandy (and were retrofitted as the campaign went on). Well jeal.
Not a clue........i'm getting so wrapped up in information regarding the Churchill that i don't know whether i'm coming or going.I see so many modifications on these vehicles that it's even harder to know what to do. What a fascinating tank.......it's sort of becoming an obsession.
A few more fittings and fixings going on.A lot of work still to do on the periscopes and mountings, the flag carrier on the side is nearly done and like the original is made of material.
A great project and looking forward to seeing final tank. Just thinking ahead I would expect this model to weigh about a ton? There are good vehicle trailers around, but perhaps you would to drive it to events, can't image how the discussion at the licensing office will go. Dropping the kids off at school would be great fun. Best of luck keep buggering on as Winnie would say. David
Some photos to come soon........had a break from the project as other things took priority but starting up again. The gun is now nearly finished and the turret will be completed shortly.
Latest pics.Gun now in,just working on the periscopes etc.Even the smallest details are taking an age due to the fact everything is being made from steel.....it's hard graft but enjoyable. The turret is sitting on a stanley roloing tool chest which gives a better impression of the size.
Hi Swiper,i'm hoping to post more regularly now.......work on the project is progressing slightly quicker now.
Given what you have stated I assume the scale to be around 1/5. You are making a wonderful job and I wish you well with your project. Researching Tanks poses more questions than answers due to modifications in the factories and in the field. Regards Tom
A few more pics.Gun almost complete and a few closeups of the fittings and flag carrier.....which are nearly finished.
