For those who have forgotten or even who didn't know H.M.S. Cavalier is still afloat in Chatham Historic Dockyard with about 10ft of water under her keel. Work is still being carried out to keep her in the manner befitting a "gracious old lady" by a team of volunteers of whom the majority are ex R.N. , two being ex Cavaliers.
Between decks with the exception of the machinery spaces is being worked on, and being restored to their former glory. The lower fwd mess will be the last to be tackled but is a large space, and will take time. As has been reported in the past the aft accommodation area has been converted for the use of Sea Cadets and the like with teaching facilities and over night accommodation, even a lift has been installed for disabled access. This area is not normally open to visitors.
Down below in the machinery spaces, due to the removal of asbestos some time ago thus exposing the metal work, corrosion has started setting in. A. Boiler Rm being the worst affected with large sections of the boiler having rusted off. B. Boiler Rm is by comparison in splendid condition due mainly to the efforts of four stalwart volunteers who for four years or so spent their volunteering time painting (if it didnt move it was painted). The Engine (turbine) Rm is in reasonable condition minus its asbestos coating as is the Gearing Rm.
All spaces are accesible and are done so on a weekly hull inspection checking for leaks etc, thankfully its only dust and rust that we encounter and we hope it stays that way for a lot longer.
I know that there are still people around that would love to explore down below for various reasons, but due to access limitations often caused by vertical ladders being the only way in and out it is not possible to allow the general public in (H&S rules apply).
However, if anyone would like any shots of areas not generally accesible would let me know and I will see what I can do.
Dont foget that H.M.S. Cavalier is part of the Historic Ships Display to be found at Chatham Historic Dockyard and is open daily to visitors from 10am. A good day out for all.
    B.
