my grandfather was a POW at stalag IIb i have his war journal and his story while a POW, it has names of fellow POW'S. It is becoming harder to locate families of these soldiers and i thought this site may be a good place to start, If any of you can relate to this Stalag please let me know. i want to know more and hear of your father or grandfathers time and see if maybe there is a connection. my grandfathers name is Acel E. Thompson from Tremonton Utah. he had a good friend Rudolph Blecha also from utah thanks hope to hear from someone.

Hi, My father and uncle were captured in N. Aftrica then sent to Sicily to Camp 98, then to Camp 59, then to Stalag 7A and finally to a Kammando (work) camp near Stalag 2B. My father's name is Henry Kane and his brother Richard Kane. They were marched from 2B starting around Jan 12 when the Russian offensive began. I would love to read your grandfather's story since I am doing a lecture for the local library in March. Any details of 2B would be welcomed. Also photos seem to be very elusive maybe because the Russians got there at 2B first. Good hunting, George

My father was a POW at Stalag IIB in Aug. 1943. His name was Worth Hampton (Hamp). I am working on his writings now and wish I had ask him more questions when he was alive. He was also in CC 66 in Italy, in a camp in Konisgberg, East Prussia, and Stalag IIIB. He was a POW 28 months. They were moved around a lot as the Allied front lines advanced. He had a great attitude and felt that his life was spared because he was in a POW camp.

There is a Polish woman on Facebook that has a Stalag 2b page. She has a lot of photos but many without explanations. Check her out Obozy Jenieckie w Czarnem

I found this information on a Polish website. Hammerstein is no longer, it is now Czarne. dkczarne@wp.pl is the e-mail address of the City Cultural Center in Czarne, send them an e-mail in English and in Polish.

That would be interesting, George. Where is your local library?

This young woman is a dedicated history buff. She is looking for many items from Stalag 2b including WWII aerial maps of Hammerstein, Stolp and Koslin. I too could use the same aerials. Any suggestions?

Regrettably the photo BU3663 is one of a series taken of the liberation of Stalag XIB Fallingbostel not Stalag IIB. Easy to see how the mistake was made but sloppy caption writing by IWM nonetheless. PW camps were generally numbered using Roman numerals as they reflected the number of the Wehrkreis (which bore Roman numerals) in which they were located.

New to all this. I learned yesterday that my father's first cousin was in Stalag 2B Hammerstein from February 1943 until June 1945. Though a veteran himself, my father never talked about it. The name is Pvt. Duncan O. Dodd (the O stands for Oliver). His family was from Connecticut, but I believe he lived in New York State at the time of his military service. I found a minimal record in the online archives. If any of the people on this conversation have seen his name anywhere, please reply. Thank you.

    Hello,

He was the son of Revd. Duncan F Dodds and Ethyl M. Dodds. Born in China. Deceased Sea Cliff NY 4 January 1988.

Army Ranger captured in North Africa. Following news clippings are posted in chronological order but should give you an idea. A couple pertain to his father but information about your subject was in the article so included.

Apologies but his obituary is almost illegible so reversed to black and white.

    Regards,

    Dave
