Sincere thanks to all who became Patrons, this move and upgrade would literally not have happened without you. The expense in time, funds, planning, & effort were considerable, but I'm quite happy with where we now stand.

Opportunities to become a Patron still exists for those who are interested. The process is now integrated into the site itself, anyone can become a site Patron via your user profile. If you are already a site supporter, information concerning your current Patron status is also visible in your profile. I've also edited the first post in this thread to reflect these changes.

Thanks also to the capable admin team. vP, Owen, dbf, Gage, and Paul Reed have done a fantastic job here. We are days away from 700,000 posts, and with out new server and software, I'm very much looking forward to where we are headed.

There's a time to get bashed by Forum members for supposed shortcomings but there's also a time to sit back and bask in well earned praise

The latter option has now arrived, so, on behalf of all your loyal members, a huge thank-you for getting us to this stage of the changeover, coupled with our best regards to all the Moderators for their untiring work and vigilance in keeping the site safe from intruders.

    Best regards to all

    Ron

This is uncannily reminiscent of "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him."

And what sexistry is this? A Patron? Can't I be a Matron if I so well choose? Is this the twentieth century, now?

    A

Whilst trawling through my Birthday thread I was heartened to see how many members had opted for becoming patrons.

A clear sign of the support that the Forum has now engendered !

Nice gut rot there, you drink halfway through that bottle and you'll be on the high road to the pearly gates!

    Ron, noblesse oblige, right?

To be frank I don't like the label at all, it may be somewhat awkward to people who like me until recently simply would have to count their pennies and have to pass. Of course we all know it's entirely voluntary but what do we really need the label?

    Dear Za

(Or is it Miguel ?, sorry, it's my bloody memory that is at fault !)

I take your point entirely and would like to think that the Patron label was entirely un-necessary but at the same time the need for funds was so obvious that, I for one, cheerfully accept any method whatsover to "encourage les autres"

The alternative of the Forum closing didn't bear thinking about and, be fair, the management have stressed that the site will never be a "Pay Only" site.

Still good to see you posting again and reminding me how much I value the forum.

    Best regards

    Ron

Always used to wish my Sunday morning was still Saturday night.

I'm really very impressed at the levels of donations people have made. Touched, even.

I had hoped to make the showing of a banner a user-selected setting, Za, but the system doesn't allow it to be controlled from the front end (as far as I can yet tell - still learning).
I too think 'Patron' an odd word in some ways, but the question is 'what else do you call it?'.
Don't worry, we'll still try to be just as sarcastic & dismissive neutral as ever, banner or not.
I've got to keep this 'Admin' thingy on display, and the 'Mod' one is still a nasty green, but we still hope all of this frippery doesn't really change the way people interact with each other on the site.
Forumite & WW2-fixated chap first - all that stuff secondary, I hope.

And, where the bloody hell have you been?
    Rotgut indeed.
Spidge gets it. Tequila is the best tasting petroleum distillate spirit in the world. Drink of champions!
I just don't allow myself to have it very often any more... after... things.

Your memory is excellent, Miguel and Za, we share the same body, a sort of a push-me-pull-you if you like the image :) It can be uncomfortable for me to confess I'm Miguel in my spare time, but my other personalities are even harder to swallow. And thankfully I do not believe in transmigration of the soul, I shudder at the zoo I'd be dragging behind me :))

What I meant to say, and Adam caught but said was not possible, was that perhaps we might dispense with the title entirely, donating or not, for the reason I stated.

    My pleasure, Ron.

I use the Forum daily. However, I would have liked to contribute to it's upkeep without the label of 'PATRON'. I do wonder how may members, newbies, (not having made a contribution) may now feel uncomfortable, asking for advice, queries etc? Without doubt, I realize the amount of work needed to enable the Forum to sustain and move forward. For this I sincerely thank you all. I have read we are not a 'pay site' mmmmm.
If you should reply to my view, please be kind.
A constructive discussion is welcome. Veronica.

All I can say for the moment, Veronica, is what's in post #71.
I would like to make it user-selectable to show the banner but just haven't found how to do that. If the facility exists, I'll probably do it.

I'd like to think our local culture really doesn't care about the banners of any kind. A member only really being as good as their posts, with respect earnt.
Other than a few 'site perks' (like maybe bigger storage in the gallery and a few other things we've yet to work out) by way of a 'Cheers!' from us, I've no intention of treating anyone differently day-to-day by virtue of a kind contribution. I'd imagine nobody else wants that either. (Except Drew... He probably wants a crown or something.)
Quite possibly the opposite even; an 'Oooh, look at you with your fancy banner' seems far more likely round here. like someone local walking into a pub with some overly fashionable piece of clothing, to the ribaldry of their peers.

Anyway, this is all part of the ongoing shake-out of the new setup.
Big thanks again to those of you who've bunged, and those who continue to bung.
(But we'll still ban you all if we feel like it, and/or treat you with derision on the wide open forums if needs be. OK?* )

*We haven't banned anyone for ages. Not real people anyway. Maybe a proper Nazi fairly recently, but they don't count.

You can ban veronicad herself, or was there some revolution during my self imposed exile and the N-Word became acceptable?

    :point:

Look! Smilies! the same from 20 years ago but smilies anyway. some or them at least! Where's the dancing banana? Where's Maggy Thatcher and her polka knickers?

I just became a Patron on this site, as well. I don't use it as frequently as WW2F, but I look at it a few times each week. It's nice to get a different perspective on WW2.

Since I rarely remember what happened yesterday, nevermind last year, how does one renew membership?
